Celtic Graveyards on the Upper Labe River

Abstract:

Cílem předložené práce je komplexní hodnocení fenoménu tzv. plochých keltských pohřebišť rozšířených ve stupních LT B1 – LT C1 v regionu horního toku Labe a Metuje, tj. na území uměle vymezeném spojnicemi obcí Hořice – Náchod – Opatovice n. L. – Hořenice. V jeho obvodu, jenž přibližně kopíruje hranice původního laténského sídelního regionu, bylo rozpoznáno celkem sedm lokalit se zřejmými doklady inhumace a kremace a dalších osm nálezů, u nichž informace o existenci hrobů schází, ovšem jejich charakter tuto eventualitu primárně nevylučuje (tzv. nálezy sporného charakteru). Východiskem práce je soupis dochovaného archeologického materiálu vytvořený v kombinaci s analýzou původních zpráv týkajících se jednotlivých nálezů hrobového charakteru zaznamenaných většinou již v průběhu 2. pol. 19. stol. Jednotlivé lokality byly dále hodnoceny z chronologického hlediska a z hlediska umístění v krajině. Zvláštní pozornost byla věnována rozboru pohřebního ritu a regionálním specifikům, zejména v českém prostředí nezvykle vysokému zastoupení kremace a keramiky v hrobech, jejichž původ je spatřován v silných vlivech z jihovýchodních oblastí. Aby bylo možné objasnit otázku týkající se těchto nadregionálních kontaktů, byl sledovaný region porovnán s dalšími oblastmi s výskytem laténských pohřebišť ve střední Evropě, především s územím Čech, Moravy, Horního a Dolního Slezska. V závěru byly lokality funerálního charakteru zasazeny do kontextu paralelních lokalit se sídlištní komponentou a na tomto základě byl učiněn pokus o celkovou rekonstrukci osídlené krajiny horního Polabí v době existence laténských pohřebišť.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the phenomenon of the LT B1 – C1 flat burials within the region of the upper Labe and Metuje rivers, that means the area delimitated by line joining Hořice – Náchod – Opatovice n. L. – Hořenice sites, the area which roughly corresponds with the original La Tène settlement region. So far there are known 7 burial sites with inhumations and cremations and other 8 finds without the burial evidence, but whose character does not exclude this possibility (the so called the finds of the disputable character). The basis of this thesis is the catalog of the relevant archaeological material together with the references concerning the grave findings coming from the 2nd half of the 19th century. Individual burial sites were then analyzed from the chronological point of view and in reference with their location within the landscape. Particular focus was taken to characterization of the burial customs and regional specifics, especially to the exceptionally high number of cremations and the presence of the ceramics in the graves, the phenomena which are probably connected with the impact from the southeastern areas. In reference to the question of the supraregional contacts the investigated region was compared with the other areas with the presence of the flat La Tène cemeteries in central Europe, especially with Bohemia, Moravia and Upper and Lower Silesia. Finally the burial sites were placed in context with the settlements from the same period and the attempt was made to reconstruct the middle La Tène landscape within the region of the upper Labe river.
