Attention and Executive Functions in Children with Specific Language Impairment

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to explore attention and executive functions in children with specific language impairment. The theoretical part is focused on the description of the specific language impairment and the cognitive processes called attention and executive functions. The contemporary research into this area is also included. Furthermore, in the practical part we state the plan of our research and describe our respondents. Research was made on a sample of 32 children with specific language impairment. The standardized psychological tests (trail making test, d2 test and verbal fluency test) were administered to the children. The next important point was to compare the children with specific language impairment and normally developing children in some results of these tests. Finally, we can summarize the results. Children with specific language impairment had statistically significantly lower performance of concentration, narrower fluctuation range and inferior lexical verbal fluency than normally developing children. Performance in the tests of executive functions was correlated with the age of the children (the older the children were, the better performance was). Children with specific language impairment achieved poorer performance in lexical than semantic verbal fluency.

Abstract:

Cieľom diplomovej práce je preskúmať pozornosť a exekutívne funkcie u detí s vývojovou dysfáziou. Teoretická časť je zameraná na popis vývojovej dysfázie, kognitívnych procesov pozornosť a exekutívne funkcie, výskumov realizovaných v tejto oblasti a diagnostických nástrojov, ktorými môžeme pozornosť a exekutívne funkcie skúmať. Vo výskumnej časti diplomovej práce je uvedený cieľ a metodológia výskumu, charakterizovali sme školu, kde výskum prebiehal a respondentov, ktorí sa výskumu zúčastnili. Výskum bol vykonaný na vzorke 32 detí s vývojovou dysfáziou, ktorým sme administrovali štandardizované psychologické testy (test cesty, test pozornosti d2 a test verbálnej fluencie). Na základe výsledkov môžeme zhrnúť, že deti s vývojovou dysfáziou dosahujú štatisticky významne nižší výkon sústredenia, majú užšie fluktuačné rozpätie a nižší výkon v lexikálnej verbálnej fluencii ako výkony detí dané štatistickou normou. Výkon v testoch exekutívnych funkcií koreloval s vekom (čím boli deti s vývojovou dysfáziou staršie, tým sa ich výkon zlepšoval). Deti s vývojovou dysfáziou dosahovali horší výkon v lexikálnej ako sémantickej verbálnej fluencii.
