DG. F 64.0: Sexological discourses of transsexuality

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce představuje analýzu diskurzů, jejichž prostřednictvím je v sexuologii jakožto vědní disciplíně, a to především v českých sexuologických kruzích, konceptualizována transsexualita. Pomocí rozboru vybraných dokumentů se pokouší mapovat základní mezníky vývoje sexuologického náhledu na etiologii transsexuality a identifikovat genderové předpoklady, o něž sexuologie svoje koncepce etiologie transsexuality opírala a opírá. Druhá část analýzy se zaměřuje na to, jakým způsobem se sexuologické předpoklady o genderu a sexualitě, na nichž je vystavěna současná etiologická koncepce transsexuality, promítají do pravidel standardizovaného diagnostického postupu. Na sexuologické diskurzy transsexuality je zde nahlíženo z poststrukturalistické perspektivy akcentující formativní aspekty sociálních diskurzů, a to zejména právě diskurzů vědy. Základním argumentem je, že bylo-li již gender medicínou vyloženo jako kauzální důsledek pohlavních tělesných atributů, přijmout jako reálnou "opačnou" genderovou identifikaci, která předpoklad této kauzality popírá, znamenalo z pozic medicínské subdisciplíny sexuologie pojmout ji jako problém, který má taktéž esenciální základ. Transsexualita byla definována jako důsledek poruchy vývoje mozku. Pro diagnostická kritéria se sexuologie obrátila k současným genderovým konvencím a normám sexuality, čímž dále prohloubila jejich normativní aspekty a zároveň patologizovala jednání, které je vůči nim nonkonformní.

Abstract:

The text introduces an analysis of discourses, by which the discipline of sexology, particularly in the context of the Czech Republic, conceptualizes transsexuality. Based on the analysis of selected documents, the paper aims to map the essential turning points in the development of the sexological view on the etiology of transsexuality. It also aims to identify assumptions related to gender, in which the sexological conception of etiology of transsexuality is embedded. The second part of the analysis focuses on how the sexological preconceptions of gender and sexuality form the conventions of standardized diagnostic procedure. The sexological discourses of transsexuality are theorized from the poststructuralist perspective, which accents the formative aspects of social discourses, and above all of the discourses of science. The main argument of the paper is that if gender was interpreted by medicine as a causal consequence of the bodily sexual attributes, than accepting the 'contradictory' gender identification (that denies such causality) as genuine would mean, from the standpoint of sexology, a medical subdiscipline, to conceive it as an issue of an essential basis as well. Transsexuality has been defined as a result of a cerebral development disorder. Sexology has characterized diagnostic criteria of transsexuality using contemporary gender conventions and norms of sexuality, by which it has intensified their normative aspects and simultaneously pathologized any nonconformist action.
