Rewriting Mrs Dalloway: The City of One's Mind

Abstract:

Účelem diplomové práce Literární přepis Paní Dallowayové: město své mysli je analýza hlavních postav tří románů, které se odehrávají v rámci jednoho dne – Paní Dallowayová od Virginie Woolfové, Hodiny od Michaela Cunninghama a Pět zvonů od Gail Jonesové – za použití konceptu flâneura jako pomocného nástroje. Práce se skládá z pěti částí. První kapitola se zabývá obrazem města v britské, americké a australské literatuře od poloviny devatenáctého století do současnosti. Druhá kapitola popisuje postavu flâneura a jeho ženského protipólu – flâneuse. Zaměřením se na město, romány Paní Dallowayová, Hodiny a Pět zvonů budou analyzovány v třetí, čtvrté a páté kapitole, v tomto pořadí. Analýza se soustředí na to, jak hlavní postavy vnímají město. Předpokládaný výsledkem práce je ukázat, jak město vstupuje do mysli postav a utváří jejich životy.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis Rewriting Mrs Dalloway: The City of One’s Mind is to analyse the main characters of three circadian novels–Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf, The Hours by Michael Cunningham and Five Bells by Gail Jones–using the concept of the flâneur as a guide. The thesis consists of five parts. The first chapter deals with the image of the city in British, American and Australian literature from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. The second chapter describes the figure of the flâneur and his female counterpart, the flâneuse. Focusing on the city, the novels Mrs Dalloway, The Hours and Five Bells will be analysed in the third, fourth and fifth chapter, respectively. The analysis will focus on the main characters’ perception of the city. The anticipated outcome of the thesis is to show how the city enters the characters' minds and shapes their lives.
