Individualism and religiosity in Czech and Slovak society

Abstract:

Předmětem práce je religiozita v české a slovenské společnosti a její vztah k individualismu jakožto fenoménu typickému pro moderní a postmoderní společnosti. Prvním cílem této bakalářské práce je zjistit, zda individualismus v české a slovenské společnosti míru religiozity snižuje. Druhým cílem je pak snaha o zodpovězení otázky, jestli individualismus ovlivňuje míru religiozity více na Slovensku, nebo v Česku. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a empirickou část. V teoretické části autor přibližuje vznik procesu sekularizace a individualizace v evropských společnostech. Zabývá se tím, jak jsou v současnosti reprodukovány a jakou podobu jejich vlivem získalo náboženství. V empirické části pak na základě dostupných proměnných z výběrového šetření EVS 1999 autor převádí stěžejní zkoumané koncepty do měřitelné podoby. Převážně pomocí korelačních testů poskytuje výsledky, jejichž interpretací odpovídá na obě výzkumné otázky.

Abstract:

The subject of this thesis is religiosity in Czech and Slovak society and its relation to individualism as a phenomenon, which is very typical for modern and postmodern societies. The first objective of this work is to find out whether individualism can be understood as a reason of religiosity decline. Second objective is to answer the question whether the influence of individualism on religiosity decline is stronger in Slovakia or in Czech republic. The structure of this thesis is divided into theoretical and empirical part. In the first part the author tries to describe the birth of secularization and individuation in European countries and tries to zoom in the process of reproduction of these two processes mentioned above. The consequences of the influence of individuation on religiosity is discussed as well. In the second, empirical part author chooses the appropriate variables from the European values study 1999 and defines them as a indicators of the researched phenomenon. Correlation tests are the basis thank to which the author is able to determine answers to both questions.
