Czech scene of classical puppet animation

Abstract:

Obsahem práce bude zmapování a představení české loutkové animační scény v kontextu československé, později české, kinematografie. Budu se věnovat estetické stránce animace, tedy tomu, co vlastně animace ve své podstatě znamená a jak funguje. Zmíním se o obecných typech animace a animačních technikách. Věnovat se budu také její historii a popularizaci. Představím klasický model a podobu filmové loutky a proces její výroby. Hlouběji zabrousím do principů a technologií využívaných v procesu tvorby animovaného loutkového filmu. Druhým uceleným bodem mé bakalářské práce bude představení československé a české loutkové animační scény. Věnovat se budu konkrétně tvorbě Hermíny Týrlové, Jiřího Trnky, Karla Zemana, Břetislava Pojara, Jana Švankmajera a Aurela Klimta. Připomenu také tvorbu současných nadaných výtvarníků a režisérů. V návaznosti na představení výše zmíněné české elity loutkové scény uvedu do své bakalářské práce i několik snímků posledních let. Technologie loutkové animace je všeobecně vnímána jako unikátní neobvyklé dílo, které dosáhlo svého zlatého věku, ovšem jeho popularita upadá. I to je ale důvodem, jež zaručuje její nezevšednění. Každá další nová loutka a její příběh se tak stává originálním uměleckým dílem nikoli součástí zpopularizované a konzumní stránky dnešní kinematografie. Cílem práce je podat ucelenou informaci o postupu při tvorbě loutkové animace a vznést či odpovědět na otázku, proč je žánr loutkového filmu stále kvantitativně nesrovnatelný s jinými filmovými žánry.

Abstract:

The aim of my bachelor thesis is the introduction and the survey referring to the Czech puppet animated theatre in the context of Czechoslovak and later Czech motion picture production. My thesis is partly devoted to the aesthetics of animation, i.e. what the animation is and how it works. The types of animation in general and its techniques are mentioned as well as the history and popularization of animation. The typical model of a motion picture puppet and the process of its production is introduced too. The principles and technologies used in the process of the production of animated puppet motion picture will also be revealed profoundly in this part of my thesis. The second part of my bachelor thesis comprises of the introduction of Czechoslovak and Czech puppet animation theatre. This part will be focused particularly on the work of the following artists Hermína Týrlová, Jiří Trnka, Karel Zeman, Břetislav Pojar, Jan Švankmajer and Aurel Klimt. The talented Czech artists and directors will be the matter of the concern in this part as well. Further, with the reference to the already mentioned names of the Czech outstanding artists I review some of the latest animated films. The technology of the puppet animation is generally perceived as a unique extraordinary piece of work, which has already reached its golden age, however its popularity is in the decline. Nevertheless, perhaps this is the reason for not becoming ordinary. And every new puppet and its story is the original masterpiece, not just the product of today’s mass culture of blockbuster films etc. In order to summarize, the goal of my bachelor thesis is to provide the complete information of the puppet animation production and both, submit and answer the question why this particular genre of the puppet animation motion picture has not been quantitatively comparable to other motion picture genres up to these days.
