History of Syphilis in the Czech Culture of 19th and 20th Century

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou venerických nemocí a jejich léčby ve druhé polovině devatenáctého století se zaměřením na každodenní život pacientů. Práce pohlíží na pacienty ve dvou úrovních, na úrovni statistické a osobní. Zatímco první, statistická část, se zakládá na veřejných rakouských statistikách a knihách pacientů z nemocnice v Německém Brodě, druhá část práce reflektuje nemoc a léčbu barona Johannese Nádherného z pohledu osobní korespondence a dobové lékařské literatury zabývající se syfilis.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the issue of venereal diseases and their treatment in the second half of the nineteenth century, focusing on the everyday life of patients. The thesis looks at patients on two levels, the statistical and the personal. While the first, the statistical part, is based on public Austrian statistics and patient books from the General hospital in Deutschbrod, the second part of the thesis reflects on the illness and treatment of Baron Johannes Nádherný from the perspective of personal correspondence and contemporary medical literature dealing with syphilis.
