Parallels between Kincaid’s The Autobiography of My Mother and García’s The Agüero Sisters

Abstract:

V diplomové práci se zabývám tématem překladu kultury a způsobem, jakým se kultura odráží v literárním stylu dvou románů napsaných autorkami pocházejícími ze srovnatelného kulturního prostředí. Jedná se román The Autobiography of My Mother karibsko-americké spisovatelky Jamaiky Kincaidové a román The Agüero Sisters kubánsko-americké autorky Cristiny Garcíové. Práce nejprve nastiňuje přehled teoretických přístupů k literárnímu překladu a obzvlášť si všímá rozdílu mezi chápáním překladu jako procesu a holistickým přístupem k překladu. Dále se v práci věnuji tématu překladatelských strategií ve Venutiho pojetí a stylistického přístupu k překladu. V práci předkládám podrobnou stylistickou analýzu románu The Autobiography of My Mother a zaměřuji se na překlad tohoto románu do češtiny se zřetelem na kulturu. Na základě stylistické a překladatelské analýzy románu Kincaidové se zabývám stylistickou analýzou románu Garcíové a vyzdvihuji paralely mezi oběma romány s ohledem na prezentaci kultury ve zdrojovém textu. V práci dále analyzuji možná rizika vyplývající z překladu románu The Agüero Sisters do češtiny a zkoumám stylistické prostředky hrající roli při vytváření stylu cílového textu. Na závěr uvádím paralelní text vybraných částí anglického textu a mého překladu do češtiny.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with translating culture and the ways it is reflected in a literary style of two novels written by authors with a comparable cultural background: the Caribbean American author Jamaica Kincaid’s The Autobiography of My Mother and the Cuban American author Cristina García’s The Agüero Sisters. The thesis provides an outline of theoretical approaches to literary translation, touching especially on the difference between seeing translation as a process and a holistic approach to translation. The thesis also takes up the notion of translation strategies (with a special focus on foreignization) and stylistic approaches to translation. Drawing on a detailed stylistic analysis of The Autobiography of My Mother the thesis focuses on the translation of Kincaid’s novel into Czech with respect to culture. Based on a stylistic and translation analysis of Kincaid’s novel the thesis concentrates on the stylistic analysis of García’s novel and draws parallels between the two novels as to how culture is embodied in the source text. The thesis analyzes potential risk areas in the translation of The Agüero Sisters and examines the role of stylistic choices necessary for recreating style in the target text. The parallel text consisting of selected parts of the source text and my translation are presented.
