Vietnam's position in global textile and apparel value chains

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá konceptem globálních hodnotových řetězců v oblasti textilního a oděvního průmyslu se zaměřením na Vietnam. Hospodářský růst Vietnamu v posledních dvou desetiletích lze považovat za jeden z nejpozoruhodnějších v rozvojovém světě. Textilní a oděvní průmysl je jedním z klíčových odvětví ve Vietnamu. Po zrušení Dohody o více vláknech (MFA) v roce 2005 Vietnam zaznamenal výrazný nárůst prodeje oděvů. Nicméně aktivity vietnamského textilního a oděvního průmyslu se řadí mezi aktivity s nejnižší přidanou hodnotou. Cílem bakalářské práce je zjistit, zda ve Vietnamu v textilním a oděvním odvětví došlo či dochází k ekonomickému a sociálnímu upgradingu v období od zrušení MFA v roce 2005 až do roku 2022. Vedlejším cílem je zjistit současnou pozici textilního a oděvního průmyslu v hodnotovém řetězci. V první části bakalářské práce je představen teoretický základ. Je zde kladen důraz na teorii upgradingu a downgradingu. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena na GVC v textilním a oděvním průmyslu ve Vietnamu. Závěrečná kapitola je zaměřena na analýzu ekonomického a sociálního upgradingu ve zmíněných odvětvích ve Vietnamu. Práce je zakončena SWOT analýzou průmyslů.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with global value chains in the textile and clothing industry, focusing on Vietnam. Vietnam's economic growth in the last two decades can be considered one of the most remarkable in the developing world. The textile and garment industry is one of the key sectors in Vietnam. Following the abolition of the Multi Fibre Agreement (MFA) in 2005, Vietnam significantly increased apparel sales. However, the activities of the Vietnamese textile and garment industry are among the lowest value-added activities. This thesis aims to determine whether Vietnam has experienced economic and social upgrading in the textile and garment sector between the abolition of MFA in 2005 and 2022. A secondary aim is to find out the current position of the textile and garment industry in the value chain. The theoretical background is presented in the first part of the bachelor thesis. The focus is on the theory of upgrading and downgrading. The second chapter focuses on GVCs in Vietnam's textile and garment industry. The final chapter focuses on analysing economic and social upgrading in the mentioned industries in Vietnam. The thesis concludes with a SWOT analysis of the sectors.
