Contemporary Theories of Ethnic Conflict

Abstract:

Tato práce předkládá spektrum nejvlivnějších soudobých teorií etnických konfliktů a na základě jejich rozpracování a následné syntézy formuluje vlastní přístup, který poté ověřuje na případové studii. Práce má dvě části. První z nich je část teoretická. Zobrazuje etnický konflikt jako komplexní jev a rozkrývá základní souvislosti mezi pojmy modernita, etnicita, nacionalismus a národ. Výstupem první části je syntéza nejvlivnějších soudobých konceptů etnických konfliktů. Druhá část práce se zabývá aplikací této syntézy na vnitřní konflikt v Barmě, který propukl na konci čtyřicátých let 20. století a trvá do současnosti.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to present the most influential contemporary theories of ethnic conflict. The elaboration of these theories is followed by a synthesis of the main notions, which forms a basis for a case study. The thesis is structured into two parts. The first part is strictly theoretic. It depicts ethnic conflict as a complex phenomenon and describes the most fundamental connections between modernity, ethnicity, nationalism and nation. A synthesis of the main points is made at the end of the first part. The second part of this deals with an application of the synthesis on an internal conflict in Barma, which broke out at the end of the 40s a has not been resolved yet.
