Evolution and Impact of Stigmatization on Young Adults Diagnosed with ADHD

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá retrospektivně pociťovaným stigmatem mladých dospělých s ADHD. Cílem je nahlédnutí do toho, jak tito mladí dospělí vnímají stigmatizaci ve svém životě, jaký dopad na ně má a měla a jak s ní dále pracují. V teoretické části jsem nejdříve představila různé teorie a druhy stigmatu, poté jsem popsala stigma okolo duševních nemocí, a jaké důsledky stigmatizace nese, i strategie jejího řešení. Dále jsem stručně popsala, co je to ADHD, a pokračovala kapitolou o stigmatu ohledně ADHD. Pro empirickou část práce jsem zvolila kvalitativní design, data jsem sbírala pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a dále je analyzovala interpretativní fenomenologickou analýzou. Vzniklo pět hlavních tematických kategorií: vnímání ADHD očima respondentů, zažitá/vnímaná stigmatizace, pocit odlišnosti, dopady stigmatu a co pomohlo a pomůže. Hlavní výsledky poukázaly na problemati-ku stigmatizace a její dopad na jedince s ADHD. Výsledky také ilustrovaly jak se stigmatem a sebestigmatem respondenti pracují. Dále bylo poukázáno na možné strategie podpory a pomoci.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines retrospectively the perceived stigma of young adults with ADHD. The aim of this study was to gain insight into how these young adults perceive stigma in their lives, what impact it has and has had on them, and how they continue to work with it in their lives. In the theoretical part, firstly I introduced the different theories and types of stigma, then described the stigma around mental illness and what consequences stigma causes and strategies for change. Next, I briefly introduced what ADHD is and I continued with a chapter about the stigma around ADHD. For the empirical part of the thesis, I chose a qualitative design, collecting data through semi-structured interviews and further analyzing it through interpretive phenomenological analysis. Five main thematic categories emerged, namely the perception of ADHD through the eyes of the respondents, experienced/perceived stigma, feeling different, the effects of stigma and what helped and will help. The main results highlighted the issue of stigma and its impact on individuals with ADHD. The results also illustrated how respondents work with stigma and self-stigma. Furthermore, possible strategies for support and help were highlighted.
