The Pontic Greeks – an authentic depiction of life destinies of several generations in the first half of the 20th century

Abstract:

Předmětem této diplomové práce je autentický obraz života pontských Řeků a jejich potomků po odchodu z jejich domoviny – Pontu, v severní oblasti Malé Asie a na jižním pobřeží Černého moře. Jsou zde podrobněji zpracovány historické souvislosti jako vhled do počátků útlaku pontských Řeků osmanskými Turky. Dále jsou uvedeny důvodu odchodu a následně deportací a násilností na pontských Řecích, jejich migrace do Řecka, do Gruzie a do Ruské říše a později do evropských zemí, do Zámoří a jejich integrace v tamním prostředí. Je zde zmíněno zachování jejich víry, kultury, folklóru, a udržení tradic do dnešních dní. V závěru zmiňuji pontskou literaturu a existenci pontských klubů v diaspoře v Zámoří. Práce je uzavřena mým osobním zhodnocením dnešního života pontských Řeků.

Abstract:

The subject of this diploma thesis is an authentic picture of the life of the Pontic Greeks and their descendants after leaving their homeland – Pontus in the northern region of Asia Minor and on the southern coast of the Black Sea. Historical context is presented in more detail as an insight into the beginnings of the oppression of the Pontic Greeks by the Ottoman Turks. The reasons for the departure and subsequent deportations and violence against the Pontic Greeks, their migration to Greece, Georgia and the Russian Empire and later to European countries as well as overseas and their integration in the local environment are also presented. The preservation of their faith, culture, folklore, and maintaining traditions to this day is mentioned here. In the end, I mention Pontic literature and the existence of Pontic clubs in the diaspora overseas. The thesis is concluded with my personal assessment of today's life of the Pontic Greeks.
