The relationship between social media usage and body image

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu aktuální problematiky užívání sociálních sítí v souvislosti s tělesným sebepojetím jejich uživatelů. Orientuje se primárně na psychologický fenomén spokojenosti/nespokojenosti s vlastním tělem, který si právě ve vztahu s užíváním - především vizuálních komunikačních platforem (Facebook, Instagram apod.), zasluhuje čím dál více akademické pozornosti. V teoretické části představíme téma tělesného sebepojetí spolu s jeho vymezením, vývojovým rámcem a také zprostředkujeme přehled problematiky tohoto tématu ve vztahu k současnosti. Dále se věnujeme tématu sociálních sítí z pohledu vlivného nástroje provázející a ovlivňující lidské životy dnešní doby, včetně jejich přínosů a rizik spolu s propojením tématu body image. Následně přiblížíme témata sebeprezentace a sociálního srovnávání na sociálních sítích, jež uvádíme jako běžné, a především stěžejní typy chování na sociálních sítích ve vztahu k problematice body image. V rámci výzkumné části jsme se téma pokusili představit v kontextu charakteristik užívání sociálních sítí a některých dalších vztažených osobnostních proměnných. Hlavním výzkumným cílem bylo prozkoumat a popsat vztah mezi užíváním sociálních sítí a tělesným sebepojetím jejich uživatelů. Byl zvolen výzkumný design korelační studie, v níž jsme využili dohromady sedm dotazníkových metod. Jedná se konkrétně o Dotazník sebepřijetí a kompetentnosti (SLCS-R), Multidimenzionální dotazník tělesného sebepojetí (MBSRQ), Basic Olomouc Body Rating škálu (BOBR), Škálu životní spokojenosti (SWLS), Dotazník pěti aspektů všímavosti (FFMQ-15-CZ), Osobnostní inventář narcismu (NPI - 16) a vlastní vytvořený dotazník zabývající se specifickými otázkami užívání sociálních sítí. Sběr dat byl zprostředkován pomocí sociálních sítí a dále pomocí dalších distribučních prostředků. Výzkumný soubor reprezentovalo 1140 respondentů, z toho 783 žen a 357 mužů, s věkovým průměrem 22 let. Výsledky jsou prezentovány ve výzkumné části bakalářské práce.

Abstract:

The presented bachelor thesis deals with the current issue of using social networks in connection to the physical self-concept of its users. It focuses primarily on the psychological phenomenon of satisfaction / dissatisfaction with one's own body, which in relation to use - especially visual communication platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc.), deserves more and more academic attention. In the theoretical part, we will introduce the topic of bodily self-concept together with its definition, developmental framework and also provide an overview of the issues of this topic. We also deal with the problematics of social networks from the point of view of an influential tool accompanying and influencing human lives of today, including their benefits and risks, together with the connection to the topic of body image. Subsequently, we will introduce the topics of self-presentation and social comparison on social networks, which we present as common, and especially the key types of behavior on social networks in relation to the issue of body image. In the research part, we tried to present the topic in the context of characteristics of the use of social networks and some other related personality variables. The main research goal was to explore and describe the relationship between the use of social networks and the physical self-concept of its users. The research design of the correlation study was chosen, in which we used a total of seven questionnaire methods. These are, in particular, the Self-Liking/Self Competence Scale (SLCS-R), the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ), the Basic Olomouc Body Rating Scale (BOBR), Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS), 15 - Item Five-Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ-15-CZ), Narcissistic Personality Inventory-16 (NPI - 16) and own created questionnaire dealing with specific issues of social network use. Data collection was mediated through social networks and other distribution tools. The research group was represented by 1140 respondents, of which 783 were women and 357 men, with an average age of 22 years. The results are presented in the research part of the bachelor thesis.
