The role of a mentor and its influence on students of General Nursing and Midwifery

Abstract:

Úvod: Mentoring je způsob, jak přenést informace, dovednosti, zkušenosti na studenta tak, že je student může dobře využívat a zároveň si tím postupně budovat sebejistotu. Úlohou mentora je především povzbuzovat, vychovávat a podporovat, protože mentor již jednou tuto cestu prošel. Mentoring má svá pozitiva ale i negativa, kterými se práce zabývala (Petrášová 2014). Cíl: Hlavním cílem bylo posoudit roli mentora v klinické praxi. Metodika: Kombinace kvantitativních a kvalitativních metod ve 4 fázích. Kvantitativní metoda byla zpracována formou dotazníku, kde respondenti v celkovém počtu N = 133 byli studenti, kteří již absolvovali, alespoň část klinické praxe. Kvantitativní metoda sloužila pouze k zmapování prostředí mentoringu a byla vyhodnocována pomocí grafů v Microsoft Excel. Kvalitativní metoda byla dělána formou Focus group, kde respondenti v celkovém počtu N = 13 byli mentoři, kteří neprošli mentorským kurzem z jedné vybrané nemocnice. Metoda Focus group byla vyhodnocena pomocí kódování. Výsledky: Díky průzkumu bylo zjištěno, že studenti nevidí většinou žádný rozdíl mezi vedením klinické praxe sestrou či mentorem. Rozdíl nastává až tehdy, když dojdeme na posouzení vztahu mezi studentem a sestrou/mentorem. Zde studenti uvádějí, že lepší vztah mají s mentorem klinické praxe. Ze strany mentorů bylo zjištěno, že mentoři vnímají mentoring, jako pomoc studentům, jejich vztah je ovlivněn zájmem a chováním studentů. Mentoři se chtějí ve své práci mentora zlepšovat a na základě metodických listů doufají, že budou zkvalitňovat mentoring v klinické praxi a zlepšovat prožitek studentů. Závěr: Mentor by měl zastávat roli profesionála, který umí a chce vést studenty a předávat jim jeho rady a zkušenosti. Měl by umět přijímat kritiku a naučit se předat zodpovědnost i na stranu studenta, a tudíž zapojovat studenty i v rámci složitějších výkonů. Mentor a student by se navzájem měli učit, respektovat, komunikovat, a hlavně dělat svou práci s láskou a úctou. Diplomová práce má přispět k uvědomění si role mentora v klinické praxi a následně má výstup této práce zjednodušit mentorům vstup do mentorství a jejich práci mentora.

Abstract:

Introduction: Mentoring is a way to transfer information, skills, and experience to a student so that the student can use them well and at the same time gradually build self-confidence. The mentor's role is primarily to encourage, educate and support, because the mentor has already gone through this path once. Mentoring has its positives, but also its negatives, which the work dealt with (Petrášová 2014). Objective: The main aim was to assess the role of the mentor in clinical practice. Methodology: Combination of quantitative and qualitative methods in 4 phases. The quantitative method was developed in the form of a questionnaire, where the respondents in the total number of N = 133 were students who had already completed at least part of the clinical practice. The quantitative method served only to map the mentoring environment and was evaluated using graphs in Microsoft Excel. The qualitative method was done in the form of a Focus group, where the respondents in the total number of N = 13 were mentors who did not go through a mentoring course from one selected hospital. The Focus group method was evaluated using coding. Results: Thanks to the survey, we found out that students mostly do not see any difference between the management of clinical practice by a nurse or a mentor. The difference only occurs when we come to the assessment of the relationship between the student nurse/mentor. Here, students report having a better relationship with their clinical practice mentor. From the side of mentors, we found that mentors perceive mentoring as helping students, their relationship is influenced by students' interest and behavior. Mentors want to improve their work as a mentor and based on the methodological sheets, hope to improve the quality of mentoring in clinical practice and improve the experience of students. Conclusion: A mentor should play the role of a professional who can and wants to guide students and pass on his advice and experience to them. He should be able to accept criticism and learn to transfer responsibility to the student as well and therefore involve students even in more complex performances. Mentor and student should learn from each other, respect each other, communicate, and most importantly do their work with love and respect. The diploma thesis is intended to contribute to the awareness of the mentor's role in clinical practice, and subsequently the output of this thesis is to simplify mentors' entry into mentoring and their work as a mentor.
