Tourism and the phenomenon of dark tourism with a focus on the Terezín Memorial

Abstract:

Práce je zaměřena na zkoumání fenoménu temného turismu v České republice na příkladu Památníku Terezín. Je možné pozorovat, že o temný turismus je všude ve světě v současné době stále větší zájem. V práci je zkoumáno rozdělení temného turismu podle Phillipa Stonea, přičemž nejvíce pozornosti je věnováno jeho teoretickému vymezení. Teoretická část dále komplexně představuje vliv cestovního ruchu na národní hospodářství a jeho provázanost s veřejnou správou. V analytické části práce je provedeno dotazníkové šetření, které je speciálně zaměřené na respondenty, jenž navštívili Památník Terezín. Práce sleduje motivaci návštěvníků, proč do Památníku Terezín zavítali, a zda jejich motivace souvisela s temným turismem. Dotazníkové šetření se však neomezuje pouze na motivaci respondentů, ale také zjišťuje, zda návštěva Terezína může u lidí vyvolat zájem o současné geopolitické konflikty a vyvarovat se stejných katastrof, kterým lidstvo čelilo za druhé světové války ze strany nacistického Německa. Výsledky dotazníkového šetření ukazují, že v případě Památníku Terezín převažuje edukativní a pietní rozměr návštěvy nad motivy senzace či vyhledávání silných emocí.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on examining the phenomenon of dark tourism in the Czech Republic using the example of the Terezín Memorial. It can be observed that dark tourism is currently attracting increasing interest around the world. The thesis will examine Phillip Stone's classification of dark tourism, with the greatest attention paid to its theoretical definition. The theoretical part will also comprehensively present the impact of tourism on the national economy and its interconnection with public administration. The practical part of the thesis will include a questionnaire survey specifically focused on respondents who have visited the Terezín Memorial. The thesis will thus examine the motivation of visitors to visit the Terezín Memorial and whether their motivation was related to dark tourism. However, the questionnaire survey will not be limited to the motivation of respondents, but will also attempt to determine whether a visit to Terezín can spark people's interest in current geopolitical conflicts and help them avoid the same catastrophes that humanity faced during World War II at the hands of Nazi Germany. The results of the questionnaire survey indicate that, in the case of the Terezín Memorial, the educational and commemorative aspects of the visit outweigh motives related to sensation or the pursuit of strong emotions.
