Homophonic wordplays in hashtags on Weibo social network

Abstract:

The main purpose of this bachelor thesis is to introduce homophonic puns which appear on Weibo (one of the largest social networks in China). Because Chinese language has relatively few syllables and many Chinese characters with different meaning have the same pronunciation, the existence of homophones in Chinese is a very common phenomenon. Homophonic puns do not only express Chinese-style humor, but also indirectly reflect the cultural habits of Chinese people, like avoiding taboos and using euphemisms. In modern Chinese society, with the development of the Internet and under the influence of foreign cultures and Chinese dialects, there have been created many new online homophonic expressions. Although many foreigners can speak Chinese, they don't understand Chinese homophonic humor. This paper explores the relationship between homophony and culture in depth. By analyzing the“funny”category, it will be explained how homophonic humour in China is created. After reading the analysis of hashtags in the “life” category with the detailed description of homophonic expressions frequently used in daily life of Chinese society, the readers will be able to better understand the true meaning of homophonic puns and the reasons for their occurrence on Weibo.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce je predstavenie homofónnych slovných hračiek, ktoré sa objavujú na jednej z najväčších sociálnych sietí v Číne zvanej Weibo. Pretože čínština má relatívne málo slabík a mnohé čínske znaky s rôznym významom majú rovnakú výslovnosť, je existencia homofónov v čínštine veľmi častým javom. Homofónne slovné hračky nielenže vyjadrujú humor v čínskom štýle, ale nepriamo odrážajú aj kultúrne zvyky Číňanov, ako napríklad vyhýbanie sa tabu a používanie eufemizmov. V modernej čínskej spoločnosti sa s rozvojom internetu a pod vplyvom cudzích kultúr a čínskych dialektov sformovalo veľa nových online výrazov. Napriek tomu, že mnohí cudzinci hovoria po čínsky, nedokážu pochopiť čínsky homofónny humor. Táto práca do hĺbky preskúma vzťah medzi homofóniou a kultúrou; analýzou homofónnych hashtagov v kategórii „vtipné“ vysvetlíme, akým spôsobom je vytváraný homofónny humor v Číne, a analýza hashtagov v kategórii „život“, spolu s detailným popisom homofónnych výrazov, ktoré sa často používajú v čínskej spoločnosti, umožnia čitateľom po prečítaní lepšie pochopiť pravý význam homofónnych slovných spojení a dôvody ich výskytu na sociálnej sieti Weibo.
