Pragmatism and scientific realism as eventual philosophies of science for the IR research

Abstract:

Disertační práce má čtyři cíle 1) identifikovat společné rysy pragmatismu a realismu a naopak porozumět fundamentálním odlišnostem mezi nimi. Tímto způsobem mohou být charakterizovány důsledky pro filosofii vědy v MV, které ze vzájemného potýkání mohou vyplývat. 2) Představení obou posic a především nabídnutí jasné pragmatické koncepce, která by mohla sloužit jako ucelenější a bohatší alternativa pragmatickým přístupům dosud představeným v MV představeny. Ucelená pragmatická koncepce má však především sloužit jako smysluplnější filosoficko-vědní alternativa vědeckému realismu; 3) předložení kritické reflexe vědeckého realismu, založené na kombinaci nových a již existujících kritických vhledů do této problematiky; 4) na základě předchozích třech bodů obhájit smysluplnost diskuse mezi realismem a pragmatismem a nabídnout možnost dalšího směřování této diskuse. Kritická reflexe realismu ukázala, že přes značné slabiny existují oblasti, v nichž obohatila filosofickovědní pole MV. Bylo rovněž ukázáno, že naturalistické pojetí progresivity vědy nepředstavuje řešení diskuse realismus versus pragmatismus. V závěru byly nabídnuty možné směry diskuse realismus a pragmatismus, které by mohly dále obohatit současnou filosofii vědy v mezinárodních vztazích.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is fourwould: 1) to identify common features of pragmatism and realism and to capture the specific dynamics that result from thein mutual skirmish, as well as to identify consequences that follow from the tension as such; 2) To introduce both position and especially to offer a clear pragmatic conception that can serve as a more coherent and richer alternative to recently spreaded pragmatic approaches within IR, and, more importantly, to offer pragmatism as a more viable philosophy-of-science alternative for the study of IR; 3) To present a critical account of scientific realism by providing new insights to the issue of realism in a combination with some more traditional approaches; 4) On the basis of the three preceeding points to defend viability of the realism-pragmatism debate and to offer a particular way of how the future debate could be structured. The thesis shows that naturalistic and sceptical solution to the problem of realism – pragmatism debate is not capable of delivering on its promise. Instead, a careful engagement in epistemological introspection of procedures of pragmatically built theories could provide a fertile ground for debate about scientific progress in the field of IR. In the conclusion, possible ways of future debates between pragmatism and realism were suggested, with the aim to show that these could enhance recent IR’s meta-theoretical terrain.
