Abortion Debate in the USA: Critical Discourse Analysis

Anotace:

The purpose of this thesis is to identify and analyze the various discursive strategies used by Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump when they tackled the topic of abortion during the final presidential debate of 2016, which was a crucial point in the election campaign, as it was the last opportunity for the two candidates to show all of their positions in front of the electorate before the election day. The thesis chooses a case study method with the objective of providing a thorough and in-depth critical discourse analysis of the discourse of the two candidates in that debate. The critical analysis is conducted using the framework of the Discourse Historical approach proposed by Wodak (2015) with the aim of demonstrating how the two politicians used language to influence public opinion while advancing their political agendas
