From the Modern Gallery, Prague to the State Gallery

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá dlouhotrvajícím plánováním stavby galerijní budovy pro České země v Praze. Instituce byla založena císařem Františkem Josefem I. na počátku 20. století jako Moderní galerie Království Českého. V době první republiky se idea reprezentativní galerijní budovy přenesla na Státní galerii, která měla sloužit několika pražským sbírkám. Kromě jmenované Moderní galerie mezi ně patřila i Obrazárna Společnosti vlasteneckých přátel umění, nebo tzv. Hollareum. Předkládaná práce popisuje směřování k budově galerie na malostranském ostrově Kampa, zaměřuje se na různorodé architektonické návrhy mnoha architektů a vysvětluje důvody, které nakonec vedly k nerealizování galerie.

Abstract:

This thesis is focused on the long-lasting planning of the central gallery for Czech lands in Prague. This institution was founded by Emperor Franz Joseph I. in the early 20th century as the Modern Gallery of Kingdom of Bohemia. During the First Republic the idea transferred to the Czechoslovakian State Gallery and was intended to serve as a location for several assorted art collections. Besides mentioned Modern Gallery there was purpose to locate together to the same buildig also the Picture Gallery of the Society of Patriotic Friends of Arts or the so-called Hollareum. This thesis describes endeavour to built gallery on the Kampa Island on the Mala Strana, detaily zoomed in broad variety of architectural proposals from numerous architects and explain the reasons why all this workd led nowhere and idea of gallery was not realized.
