Translation of Character Names in Children s Literature: A Chronological View

Anotace:

Práce mapuje jména postav v angloamerické beletrii pro děti a porovnává je s jejich českými překlady. Pro výzkum byl použit korpus sestávající z děl dětské literatury přeložených do češtiny ve 20. a 21. století. Pro převedení jmen z angličtiny do češtiny lze použít několika metod, například přenos, vypuštění, částečné vypuštění, doplnění, naturalizace, doslovný překlad a synonymika, modifikace, imitace, překlad na základě zvukové podobnosti nebo nahrazení. Metody použité pro překlad jmen z angličtiny do češtiny jsou seřazeny chronologicky a také podle žánrů. Hlavní žánry dětské literatury jsou: realistická fikce, dobrodružné příběhy, folklór a magická fikce a fantasy. Jména postav jsou rozdělena do tří skupin: křestní jména, příjmení a přezdívky. Zvláštní pozornost je také věnována jménům s konotacemi. Výzkum ukazuje, že existuje spojitost mezi metodou překladu a dobou, kdy překlad vznikal. To platí zejména pro křestní jména a příjmení. Hlavním faktorem ovlivňujícím dnešní překlady je globalizace a také fakt, že angličtina se stala společným jazykem celého světa. Výběr překladové metody je také ovlivněn možnou konotací, kterou má slovo v textu, a žánrem překládané knihy.

Abstract:

This thesis maps the names of characters in Anglo-American children’s fiction and compares them with their Czech translations. A corpus which consists of works of children’s literature translated into Czech in the 20th and 21st century was used for the research. There are several methods that can be used for translating character names from English to Czech: transference, omission, partial omission, addition, naturalisation, literal translation and synonymy, modification, imitation, translation on the basis of sound, and replacement. The methods used for translating names from English to Czech are arranged chronologically and according to the genres of the works. The major genres of children’s literature are: realistic fiction, adventure stories, folklore and magic fiction, and fantasy. The names of characters are divided into three groups: first names, surnames, and nicknames. A specific attention is also given to names with connotations. The research shows that there is a connection between the method used by the translator and the time of origin of the translation, mainly for first names and surnames. The main element which influences translations today is globalization and the fact that English became the lingua franca of the world. However, the choice of translation method is also influenced by the possible connotation of the name and the genre of the work.
