Simeon Partlicius' Calendarium Perpetuum Oeconomicum in the Light of Early Modern Thinking on Melothesia.

Abstract:

Calendarium perpetuum oeconomicum Simeona Partlicia je žánrově specifickým dílem sepsaným téměř na sklonku předbělohorské doby. Zahrnuje mj. poznatky z oblasti chronologie, astrologie i lékařství, které dává do kontextu s jejich užitím v praxi a každodenním životě. Ve vybraných částech se Partliciovo dílo charakterem podobá i oblíbenému lékařskému literárnímu žánru tzv. regimentu zdraví, avšak nelze ho s tímto žánrem ztotožnit v plné míře. Pro obohacení výpovědní hodnoty této práce budou společně s Partliciovým kalendářem analyzovány i dva raně novověké překlady regimentů zdraví - O zachování dobrého zdraví od Adam Hubera z Riesenpachu a Knížka o nakažení povětří od Václava Zelotýna z Krásné Hory, která ve velké míře pojednává i o moru a jeho nebeských příčinách. Tato práce si klade za cíl čtenář nastínit, jak raně novověký člověk, především z vyšších, majetných či učených kruhů vnímal a chápal nauku o melotézii, která byla součástí astrologie již od pradávna, a jakým způsobem prvky této teorie zasahovaly do jeho každodennosti.

Abstract:

Calendarium perpetuum oeconomicum by Simeon Partlicius is a genre-specific piece of scholarly literature published almost at the end of the pre-White Mountain era. Besides other things, it contains knowledge from chronology, astrology and medicine and puts it in context with its practical use in everyday life. The character of Partlicius' literary work mirrors the popular medical literary genre called regimina sanitatis in some selected parts, however complete identification of his writing with this genre is impossible. For the enrichment of the informative value of my thesis, I will analyse not only Partlicius' work but also two Early Modern translations of regimina sanitatis - O zachování dobrého zdraví by Adam Huber of Riesenpach and Knížka o nakažení povětří by Václav Zelotýn of Krásná Hora, which to a great extent discuss the issue of the Plague and its celestial causes. This thesis aims to outline the imagination of Early Modern people from higher, wealthy or scholarly social circles about the theory of melothesia, which has been part of astrology since ancient times, and to offer an insight into these people's thoughts on this topic and how it affected their everyday lives.
