Chinese sci-fi at the end of Qing dynasty and today

Abstract:

This thesis focuses on Chinese science fiction (kēxué huànxiǎng 科学幻想) from the late Qing dynasty and the beginning of the 21st century. In the last years of the Qing dynasty, science fiction was widely promoted by Chinese reformists and intellectuals, such as Lu Xun or Liang Qichao. On the other hand, the beginning of the 21st century was the period of a real boom for Chinese science fiction. The main part of this bachelor thesis consists of analysis of the two writings from authors belonging to the first period mentioned above (namely Wu Jianren and his New Story of Stone, Xu Nianci and New Tales of Mr. Braggadocio) and the writings created in the beginning of the 21st century (Han Song with his work My Homeland Does Not Dream, Liu Cixin and his novel Three-Body Problem). The main question I am trying to answer is what is the task of the science in the chosen works, how do the authors deal with the issue of the science being concept coming from West and how do they solve the problematic relationship between China-West-science. The aim of this thesis is to find out which aspects the science fiction of both periods differ in or correspond and why it is so.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zaoberá čínskou science fiction (kēxué huànxiǎng 科学幻想) z konca obdobia panovania dynastie Qing a z počiatku 21. storočia. Ku koncu dynastie Qing bola sci-fi literatúra značne propagovaná čínskymi reformátormi a vzdelancami, ako napríklad Lu Xun či Liang Qichao. Na druhej strane, začiatok 21. storočia bol pre čínsku sci-fi obdobím pravého rozkvetu. Hlavnou časťou práce je analýza dvoch diel autorov z prvého obdobia (menovite Wu Jianren a Nový príbeh kameňa, Xu Nianci a Nové príbehy pána Chválenkára) a diel pochádzajúcich zo začiatku 21. storočia (Han Song a Moja rodná krajina nesníva, Liu Cixin a Problém troch telies). Hlavnou otázkou, ktorú si v práci kladiem, je akú úlohu v dielach hrá veda, ako sa autori vyrovnávajú s pojmom veda ako západným konceptom a ako riešia trojuholník vzťahov Číny‒Západ‒veda. Cieľom je predovšetkým zistiť, ako sa sci-fi týchto dvoch období líši, v čom sa prípadne zhoduje a čo za tým stojí.
