Two Arguments in favour of the Scientific Realism

Abstract:

Tato práce spadá do sféry vědeckého realismu, podle něhož je věda schopna poznávat realitu včetně jejích empiricky nedostupných částí. První část práce je pro uvedení do problematiky věnována popisu základních tezí a variant vědeckého realismu. Hlavním předmětem práce je představení, rozbor a obhajoba dvou důležitých argumentů užívaných ve prospěch vědeckého realismu. Prvním z nich je tzv. no-miracle argument, podle něhož úspěšnost teorií je nejlépe vysvětlitelná tím, že pravdivě popisují realitu. Druhým je argument koroborace, podle něhož se schopnost vědy popisovat realitu se potvrzuje možností detekovat stejné entity odlišnými metodami. Závěrečná část práce je věnována některým alternativám vědeckého realismu.

Abstract:

This work falls within the realm of scientific realism, according to which science is able to recognize reality, including its empirically inaccessible parts. The first part of the thesis is devoted to the description of basic theses and variants of scientific realism. The main subject of the thesis is the presentation, analysis and defense of two important arguments used for the benefit of scientific realism. The first one is the so-called no-miracle argument, according to which the success of theories is best explained by describing reality in a truthful way. The second one is the argument from corroboration, according to which the ability of science to describe reality is confirmed by the possibility to detect the same entity by different methods. The final part is devoted to some of the alternatives of scientific realism.
