The Turkish invasion of Syria on Twitter: Discourse analysis of selected media organizations' and journalists' tweets

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá pokrytím turecké invaze do Sýrie na vybraných twitterových účtech médií a novinářů. Média hrají klíčovou roli při informování o rizicích, které lidem hrozí v globalizovaném světě. Studie proto zkoumá mediální reprezentaci operace „Pramen míru“ konstruovanou prostřednictvím twitterových účtů válečné reportérky Markéty Kutilové, zahraničního reportéra Václava Černohorského, zpravodajského serveru iDnes.cz a zpravodajského kanálu České televize ČT24, a to v období od počátku invaze do uzavření příměří. Diskurzivní analýza ukazuje, že se mediální pokrytí a prezentace krize na zkoumaných účtech liší. Na konkrétním případu naznačuje, že stálé zahraniční reportéry nelze nahradit freelance reportéry, jelikož každý z nich o konfliktu informuje odlišně. Zároveň studie ukazuje, že informace na twitterových účtech médií jsou na sociální síti Twitter nedostatečné a nelze se o ně plně opřít.

Abstract:

The Diploma thesis is focused on the covering of the Turkish invasion to Syria on selected Twitter accounts of media and journalist. Media has a key role in informing about risks, which threatens people in the globalized world. The thesis examines the media representation of operation „Peace Spring“ on twitter’s accounts of war reporter Marketa Kutilová, foreign correspondent Václav Černohorský, news website iDnes.cz and TV channel from Czech television ČT24 in the period between the beginning of invasion till ceasefire. The discursive analysis shows that the media coverage and presentation of the crisis on the accounts examined differ. In a specific case, it suggests that permanent foreign correspondents cannot be replaced by freelance reporters, as each of the reports on the conflict differently. At the same time, the study shows that the information on Twitter's media accounts is insufficient on the Twitter social network and cannot be fully relied on.
