Sustainable Hotel Operations

Abstract:

The main goal of this master dissertation was to propose realistic proposals for the implementation of sustainable measures in the operations of the accommodation facility, including economic evaluation. Appropriate scientific methods were chosen for the stated purpose, such as description, comparison, analysis of related hotel documentation, survey of selected affected entities and statistical evaluation. The analysis carried out in the field helped to sort the outputs for the compilation of the survey questionnaire. There is a limit between the possibility of applying ecological measures and the available financial resources, own and foreign, needed in hotel facilities for their implementation. Solutions in the area of energy consumption, water, packaging management, waste recycling and the creation of greenery are conditioned by the funds that can be used. The data above became the subject of the hypothesis “Ecological sustainability is solvable in the short term of 3-5 years”, which remained unconfirmed and, according to the opinions of the surveyed hotel managements, solvable only in the horizon of up to 10 years. In this context, the research question "Is the effort to implement ecological sustainability in the operation of the accommodation facility also economically sustainable?" The survey also confirmed a negative answer, while a positive solution is only possible with the help of EU grant schemes, interventions, subsidies and tax breaks by the state. The diploma thesis confirmed that it is impossible to consider a comprehensive solution and application of green activities at once, on a full scale, due to a lack of financial resources. In this context, the diploma thesis emphasizes the importance of state subsidies and the irreplaceable importance of grant schemes of the European Union.

Abstract:

Hlavným cieľom diplomovej práce bolo navrhnúť realistické návrhy implementácie udržateľných opatrení do prevádzok ubytovacích zariadení vrátane ekonomického zhodnotenia. Pre stanovený účel boli zvolené zodpovedajúce vedecké metódy, ako deskripcia, komparácia, analýza súvisiacej hotelovej dokumentácie, anketový prieskum vybraných dotknutých subjektov a štatistické vyhodnotenie. Analýza vykonaná v teréne pomohla zoradiť výstupy pre zostavenie anketového dotazníka. Existuje hranica medzi možnosťou uplatnenia ekologických opatrení a disponibilnými finančnými zdrojmi, vlastnými i cudzími, potrebnými v hotelových zariadeniach na ich realizáciu. Riešenia na úseku spotreby energií, vody, obalového hospodárstva, recyklácie odpadov a tvorby zelene sú podmienené práve použiteľnými finančnými prostriedkami. Uvedené sa stalo predmetom hypotézy Ekologická udržateľnosť je riešiteľná v krátkodobom horizonte 3-5 rokov, ktorá zostala nepotvrdená a podľa názorov skúmaných hotelových manažmentov riešiteľná iba v horizonte do 10 rokov. V tomto kontexte bola koncipovaná aj výskumná otázka „Je snaha o implementáciu ekologickej udržateľnosti do prevádzky ubytovacieho zariadenia udržateľná aj ekonomicky?“ Anketa rovnako potvrdila zápornú odpoveď, pričom kladné riešenie je možné jedine s pomocou grantových schém EÚ a dotácií, intervencií, subvencií a daňových úľav zo strany štátu. Diplomová práca potvrdila, že uvažovať o celoplošnom riešení a aplikácií zelených aktivít naraz, v celej škále, je nemožné pre nedostatok finančných prostriedkov. V tejto súvislosti diplomová práca zdôrazňuje význam štátnych dotácií a nenahraditeľnú dôležitosť grantových schém Európskej únie.
