Efforts to recognize Ruthenians as an ethnic minority group in Ukraine since the collapse of the USSR

Abstract:

Rusíni jsou národem, který nemá svůj vlastní stát a jsou pouze národnostní menšinou ve státech větších národů. Ve většině států, kde tvoří významnou národnostní menšinu jsou považováni za nezávislý národ, ale na Ukrajině, kde žije poměrně početná rusínská menšina jsou bráni pouze jako podskupina ukrajinského národa. Existují určitá hnutí Rusínů, která se snaží prosadit získání statutu národnostní menšiny na Ukrajině. Tématem mé bakalářské práce je snaha Rusínů o uznání národnostní menšiny na Ukrajině od rozpadu SSSR. Nejdříve ve své práci vysvětlím základní pojmy jako je národ, nacionalismus, kulturní identita, národnostní a etnická menšina a právo ochrany národnostních menšin. V druhé části se více do hloubky zaměřím na rusínský národ, na jeho základní charakteristiku, kulturu, historii a jazyk a poslední třetí část bude zaměřena na snahy Rusínů o získání národnostní menšiny na Ukrajině od rozpadu SSSR do současnosti.

Abstract:

Ruthenians are a nation that does not have its own country but are only a national minority in nations of other, bigger countries. In most countries, where they form a significant national minority, they are considered an independent nation. However, in Ukraine, where a relatively large Ruthenian minority lives, Ruthenians are considered to be only a subgroup of the Ukrainian nation. There are several movements of Ruthenians that are trying to assert the status of this national minority in Ukraine. The theme of my bachelor's thesis is the effort of Ruthenians to be recognised as a national minority in Ukraine since the collapse of the USSR. Firstly, I will explain basic concepts such as nation, nationalism, cultural identity, national and ethnic minority and the right to protect national minorities. In the second part of my thesis, I focus more in depth on the Ruthenian nation and on its basic characteristics, its culture, history and language. The final part of my work focuses on the efforts of the Ruthenians to acquire a recognition as a national minority in Ukraine from the collapse of the USSR to the present.
