Aesthetic Aspects of Selected Symbols at Klimt and Schiele

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá estetickými aspekty symbolu ženy u Gustava Klimta a Egona Schieleho. Činí tak na základě v textu citovaných, vybraných děl, jejichž nosným tématem je právě žena. Nejdříve se však pokusíme pomocí kulturně – historického kontextu přiblížit čtenáři dobu a společnost, ve které oba malíři působili. Dále se budeme zabývat možnou dualitou významu symbolů a metodologickým postupem pro správnou interpretaci uměleckého díla. Pokusíme se zjistit, jakým způsobem oba malíři ženu a její nahotu zobrazovali a jak ji vnímali. Budeme se zabývat tématem ženské homosexuality a jeho otevřeným zpracováním v době přísných společenských konvencí. Vyústěním této práce se stane komparace dvou obrazů zobrazujících ženskou mileneckou dvojici. Na základě jejich analýzy zjistíme, v čem se interpretace daného tématu (homosexuality) u Klimta a Schieleho liší. Blíže nahlédneme do života Egona Schieleho, protože máme důvody se domnívat, že skandální malování aktů mladých dívek mělo původ v jeho dětství a zejména pak v platonické lásce k jeho nejmladší sestře Gerti.

Abstract:

This dissertation depicts the esthetic aspects of the female symbol as seen by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele. The foundation is laid through the chosen artwork cited throughout the composition where the female is the main symbol. First, with cultural and historic framework we will attempt to familiarize the reader with the era and the society which both artists influenced. Further, we will explore the possible dual meaning of the symbols, as well as the methodological process to ensure correct interpretation of the artwork. We will attempt to discover the approach both artists used to portray the female and her nudity and their perception of it all. We will illustrate the subject of female homosexuality and its open elaboration during then strict social morals. The objective of the composition will become the comparison of two paintings revealing two female lovers. Based on the analysis of the paintings we will find out the artists’ differing interpretations of this given topic. We will take a closer look into the life of Egon Shiele because reasons exist to believe that his scandalous paintings of nude young girls originated in his childhood, especially in his platonic love toward his youngest sister Gerti.
