Searching for the essence of film in contemporary Czech fine art

Abstract:

Přítomná práce se ve své hlavní části zabývá současným českým výtvarným uměním, které reflektuje kinematografii a filmové médium. Jedná se o díla zpracující téma znovuobjevení revolučních vlastností filmu a jejich využití v současných podmínkách úpadku klasického filmu. Je zde sestavena typologie výtvarných děl, která pracují s problematikou textu, filmového rámu, herectvím a záznamového zařízení. Tyto oblasti jsou ovlivněny teorií o filmových tyraniích Petera Greenawaye. Přítomná práce také řeší otázku budoucnosti média filmu a jejím cílem je navrhnout uvedená díla z oblasti pohyblivých obrazů do alternativní pozice v oblasti filmového média. Protože uvedená díla v mnohých případech vycházejí z inspirace ranou kinematografií, v další části práce jsou vypracována teoretická východiska pro účely propojení dvou časově oddělených period, z nichž nejdůležitější je Nová filmová historie. Dále pracuji s tematikou hybridnosti filmu v současném světě filmového umění a uvedu i vysvětlím pro tuto práci důležité pojmy jakými jsou remediace, mediální aparát a dispozitiv, interaktivita a reflexivita. V poslední části se věnuji otázce diváctví a proměny diváckých režimů v závislosti na institucionálních změnách.

Abstract:

For the main part, this thesis deals with contemporary Czech art that reflects the principles of cinematography. This thesis also deals with the matter of the future of film media and its aim is to suggest artworks from the field of moving images transitioning into a position as an alternative in the future, to cinematography. These artworks mostly deal with the idea of re-inventing revolutionary movie characteristics. The artists presented make use of these features in today’s decay of classical cinema. Moreover, a typology of moving picture art influenced by Peter Greenaway’s four movie tyrannies (text, professional acting, frame and recording device issues) is defined. As the contemporary artworks mentioned are mainly influenced by early cinematography, the later part of this thesis defines theoretical bases to defend the connection between those time-separated periods; of which the New Film History is the most important. Furthermore, I write about the problematics in definitions of the contemporary world of movie art and I explain concepts like remediation, media apparatus, interactivity and reflexivity. In the last part I pay attention to issues of spectatorship and its modifications due to institutional changes.
