Between altruism and tourism: volunteering among people on the move

Abstract:

Tématem této práce je dobrovolnictví s lidmi na útěku. Cílem práce je zjistit, kdo jsou dobrovolníci, vyjíždějící do neoficiálních uprchlických táborů na území Řecka a jakými způsoby na ně lze nahlížet. Tuto znalost považuji za podstatnou, kvůli situacím do kterých se dobrovolníci dostávají, při kterých často disponují mocí nad holými životy (Agamben,2011) lidí na útěku. Předem si definuji dva typy dobrovolnictví, altruismus a turismus, ty mi slouží jako pomůcka pro zjištění dalších kategorií, do kterých lze dobrovolníky zařadit dle jejich přístupů k dobrovolnictví. V analýze získávám pomocí předem definovaných teoretických východisek a dat z rozhovorů možné způsoby nahlížení na dobrovolníky. Prostřednictvím kterých se dozvídám, kdo jsou dobrovolníci. Tuto práci koncipuji jako teoretický podklad k výzkumu, zaměřený na definování dobrovolníků, což využiji v budoucím výzkumu věnovaném deheroizaci postavy dobrovolníka.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is volunteering among people on the move. The aim of the thesis is to examine the people, who have decided to work as volunteers in unofficial refugee camps in Greece. I want to find the ways how it is possible to see volunteers. I consider this knowledge significant due to the situations which volunteers are experiencing and which often put them into a position of executing power over bare lives (Agamben, 2011) of people on the move. The work starts with the definition two types of volunteering based either on altruism or tourism which sets the basic framework of further categorisation that enables me to classify volunteers according to their attitude towards volunteering. The predefined theoretical background as well as the data obtained from interviews lead to the establishment of other types of seeing volunteers that contribute to the final definition and characteristics of a volunteer. This thesis functions as a theoretical base focused on the definition of a volunteer which serves as an important step in my future research that will focus on deheroization of volunteers.
