The transformative and self-developmental potential of negative experience under the influence of a psychedelic substance from a longitudinal perspective

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to familiarize the reader with the topic of psychedelic substances, historical aspects of their use, potential use in therapy, as well as the effects of these substances on the physiological and psychological side of the individual. The theoretical part of the work creates space for the reader to comprehensively grasp the psychedelic experience and the potential benefits of these substances, and thus creates a basis for the empirical part, which is devoted to the experience on psychedelic substances from a long-term perspective, specifically the "bad trip" experience. The main goal of the research part of the work is to find out whether a psychedelic experience, undergone with the intention of self-development, can be beneficial for the user despite the presence of a demanding experience, referred to as a "bad trip". The research was carried out using the qualitative approach of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, in the form of a semi-structured interview with four respondents in the period of young adulthood who had at least one negative experience with psychedelics, with an interval of at least one year. The statements of the respondents showed that, despite the negative experience, this experience was retroactively evaluated as positive, with varying degrees of positive benefits from a long-term perspective present in all respondents. The aim of the work was mainly to acquire and expand knowledge about this form of experience, as nowadays, despite the great professional interest in these substances, there is still only a small amount of research focused on the potential benefit of a negative experience under the influence of psychedelics.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je všeobecne oboznámiť čitateľa s tematikou psychedelických látok, historickými aspektami ich užívania, potenciálnym využitím v terapii, ako aj účinkami týchto látok na fyziologickú a psychologickú stránku jedinca. Teoretická časť práce pre čitateľa vytvára priestor na rozsiahle uchopenie psychedelickej skúsenosti a potenciálnych prínosov týchto látok, a vytvára tak základ pre empirickú časť, ktorá sa venuje zážitku na psychedelickej látke z dlhodobej perspektívy, konkrétne „bad trip“ skúsenosti. Hlavným cieľom výskumnej časti práce je zistiť, či môže byť psychedelická skúsenosť, podstúpená so sebarozvojovým zámerom prínosná pre užívateľa aj napriek prítomnosti náročnej skúsenosti, označovanej ako „bad trip“. Výskum bol prevedený kvalitatívnym prístupom Interpretatívnej fenomenologickej analýzy, formou pološtrukturovaného rozhovoru so štyrmi respondentami v období mladej dospelosti, ktorí mali aspoň jednu negatívnu skúsenosť na psychedeliku, s odstupom minimálne jedného roku. Výpovede respondentov preukázali, že aj napriek negatívnemu zážitku bola táto skúsenosť spätne hodnotená ako pozitívna, s rôznou, avšak u všetkých respondentov prítomnou mierou pozitívnych prínosov z dlhodobej perspektívy. Snahou práce bolo najmä získať a rozšíriť znalosti o takejto forme zážitku, nakoľko v dnešnej dobe, aj napriek veľkému odbornému záujmu o tieto látky, existuje zatiaľ iba malé množstvo výskumov zameraných na potenciálny prínos negatívnej skúsenosti pod vplyvom psychedelika.
