Echoes of souls: Death and the rites of passage in religions of Japan

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis discusses the theme of mortuary rites in Japan. It is focusing on characteristics of buddhist and shinto ceremonies, trying to find the structure of the rites of passage inside, as defined by Arnold van Gennep. This work is presenting the dead, who is being held in a liminal phase during the funeral ceremony. His/her transition to a new state of being is deliberately accompanied by various rituals of the bereaved, who are to help the dead on his journey. Therefore the bachelors thesis is also concentrating, to a large extent, on the status of the dead in the family household and on the way the living relate to the dead. Part of this work is an outline of a relationship between family members and the dead, terminology by which the person is marked after death and the need of keeping the memorial ceremonies.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca pojednáva o pohrebných obradoch v Japonsku. Zameriava sa hlavne na opis buddhistických a shinto obradov, v snahe nájsť v nich štruktúru prechodového rituálu, ako ho formuloval Arnold van Gennep. Práca prezentuje mŕtveho, ktorý sa nachádza počas pohrebného obradu v liminálnej fáze. Jeho prechod do nového stavu bytia je nutne sprevádzaný rôznymi rituálnymi úkonmi pozostalých, ktorí majú dopomôcť mŕtvemu na jeho ceste. Vo veľkom rozsahu sa preto bakalárska práca sústreďuje i na postavenie mŕtveho v rámci rodinnej domácnosti i na prístup, akým sa k mŕtvemu vzťahujú živí. Súčasťou práce je naznačenie vzťahu rodinných príslušníkov k mŕtvemu, jeho označenie po smrti a potreba dodržiavania spomienkových obradov.
