A comparison of momentum trading and passive investing in the US stock market

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce porovnává dva investiční přístupy - momentum obchodování a pasivní investování. Cílem práce je ověřit pravdivost hypotézy, že ve zvoleném časovém období bylo prostřednictvím momentum obchodování na americkém akciovém trhu možné dosáhnout vyšších výnosů než prostřednictvím pasivního investování na stejném trhu bez konsiderace daní. V případě potvrzení hypotézy je následujícím cílem zjistit, jaká je nejvyšší možná míra zdanění příjmů z prodeje cenných papírů, za které by výnosy z momentum obchodování zůstávaly vyšší než výnosy z pasivního investování (za předpokladu nerealizace výnosů či osvobození pasivního investování od daně díky splnění časového testu), a ve kterých zemích je taková či nižší sazba pro fyzické osoby platná. Teoretická část práce nejprve vysvětluje problematiku investičního rizika a teorie efektivních trhů. Dále tato část popisuje dva zkoumané investiční přístupy. V praktické části je představena metodika měření a komparace, následně jsou porovnány výsledky momentum obchodování a pasivního investování ve sledovaném období bez konsiderace daní. Nakonec dochází k monitoringu daňových sazeb pro příjmy z prodeje cenných papírů v jednotlivých státech a k výpočtu maximálních daňových sazeb, za kterých si testované momentum strategie udržují oproti pasivnímu investování ve sledovaném období vyšší výnosnost.

Abstract:

This thesis compares two investment approaches - momentum trading and passive investing. The main objective of the thesis is to test the assumption that higher returns could be achieved through momentum trading than through passive investing in the US stock market in the selected time period without considering the effects of taxation. If this assumption is confirmed, the next objective is to compute the highest possible rate of capital gains tax under which the returns from momentum trading would remain higher than the returns from passive investing (assuming the situation of no realisation of returns or tax exemption of passive investing) and find out in which countries is a lower than the computed rate applicable to individuals. The theoretical part of the paper first explains the issues of investment risk and the theory of efficient markets. This section is followed by the desription of the two examined investment approaches. In the practical part of the thesis, the measurement and comparison methodology is presented, followed by a comparison of the results of momentum trading and passive investing without tax consolidation. Finally, the capital gains tax rates in different states are monitored and the maximum tax rates under which the tested momentum strategies maintain higher returns compared to passive investing are calculated.
