The reflecting team in family therapy: clients' perspective

Abstract:

The growing popularity of the reflecting team in different contexts instigates the need of the empirical inquiry of this tendency. This working model entered into the family therapy in 80's and it is based on the collaborative and social constructionist principles. In this work I focus on context of private family psycho-therapy with the reflecting team, primarily on direct experience of one family. As a member of the team I was present in eight sessions with this family. My thesis is a result of the investigation of their experience. I analysed data using the interpretative phenomenological analysis even though it is not the usual tool to deal with data from interviewing a group. Nevertheless, the family as a genuine group and it's dynamics let the new meanings and ideas arise. Those could probably not emerge if the individual interviews were used. At the same time, I did not ignore the unique experience of each family member. The results brought the expected finding that the team shows the multiple perspectives, but contributively were understood also the acceleration of the process of reconciliation, indirectedness and the spatial separateness of the team. The presence of the team changed the understanding of the role of the therapist and the expectations of the therapy in general: it helped parents to get rid of the need for the children upbringing manual. Some family members needed more information about the team members. They pointed out the limited amount of re-flections they could remember and the importance of the preservation of the possibility not to respond to the reflections directly. Some of these findings could contribute to enhance the practice with teams.

Abstract:

Vzrastajúca popularita reflektujúcich tímov v rôznych kontextoch podnecuje potrebu empirického výskumu praxe s nimi. Tento model práce vznikol v 80. - tych rokoch 20. storočia z rodinnej terapie a je postavený na kolaboratívnom a sociálne konštrukcionistickom základe. V práci sa zameriavam na kontext súkromnej rodinnej terapie s reflektujúcim tímom a na skúsenosť štvorčlennej rodiny s ním. Ako členka tímu som sa zúčastnila série ôsmich sedení a diplomová práca je výsledkom spoločného skúmania tejto spolupráce po ukončení terapie. K analýze dát bola použitá interpretatívna fenomenologická analýza, ktorá nie je obvyklým spôsobom spracovania rozhovoru so skupinou, avšak rodina ako prirodzená skupina so svojou dynamikou umožnila vzniknúť novým významom, ktoré by pravdepodobne v individuálnych rozhovoroch s jednotlivcami vzniknúť nemohli, pričom si každý člen rodiny vytvoril jedinečný pohľad na reflektujúci tím. Oproti očakávanému zisteniu, že tím prinesie klientom nové pohľady, bol za nápomocný označený napríklad aj katalyzačný účinok tímu pri udobrovaní, neadresnosť a priestorová oddelenosť tímu. Svojou prítomnosťou tím výrazne zmenil vnímanie role terapeuta a tiež zásadne ovplyvnil očakávania klientov od terapie: pomohol rodičom oprostiť sa od očakávania návodu, ako postupovať pri výchove svojich dcér. Niektorí členovia rodiny potrebovali získať vopred o členoch tímu viac informácií, upozornili na obmedzené množstvo príspevkov tímu, ktoré je možné si zapamätať a na dôležitosť slobodného narábania s reflexiami, ktoré by nemalo byť predmetom priamych otázok terapeuta. Niektoré z týchto zistení môžu prispieť k zdokonaleniu praxe s reflektujúcimi témami.
