Effect of Terrorism on the Tourism and Hospitality Industry Performance on a Global Scale

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá vliv terorismu na výkony cestovního ruchu v globálním měřítku. Jádro diplomové práce tvoří teoreticko-metodologická, analytická a následně návrhová část. V teoretické části diplomové práce jsou uvedeny potřebné termíny a definice spadající do cestovního ruchu, turismu, hotelnictví, ale i již zmiňovaného terorismu. Analytická část zkoumá samotný vliv terorismu na výkony cestovního ruchu a hotelnictví na základě historických událostí, ke kterým došlo v průběhu 21. století ve vybraných destinacích. Analytická část se zabývá výzkumem, který využívá metody jako je indexní analýza, matematicko-statistická metoda, deskripce a komparace. Výzkum v analytické části se věnuje vybraným destinacím cestovního ruchu, které byly v posledních letech zasaženy teroristickými útoky. Jedná se o dvě evropské destinace – Francie a Velká Británie a dvě africké destinace – Egypt a Tunisko. Analytická část posuzuje vliv teroristických útoků v těchto destinacích na výkonnostní ukazatele cestovního ruchu. Návrhová část se zabývá samotnou eliminací vzniku teroristických útoků v destinaci cestovního ruchu, případně pak snahou minimalizovat negativní následky z hlediska hotelnictví na základě údajů získaných v analytické části. V návrhové části jsou uvedené postupy, které zaujmout k co nejrychlejší nápravě negativní situace vzniklé po teroristických útocích. Návrhy a doporučení se týkají zejména cenových a marketingových strategií, včetně práce se statistickými daty, která jsou vhodná pro ubytovací zařízení.

Abstract:

This Master’s thesis investigates the impact of terrorism on the global tourism performance. The paper’s core consists of the theoretical-methodological, analytical and project parts. At first, the theoretical part defines the necessary terms and meanings used in tourism and hospitality and, moreover, in terrorism. The analytic part concerns about the impacts of terrorism itself on the tourism performance in the matter of events that happened in the 21st century in selected destinations. This part focuses on the research that uses methods such as index analysis, mathematical-statistical method, description, deep literature review and comparison. The research aims at the selected destinations that have been affected by terrorist attacks. Namely, it is France and Great Britain in Europe and, in Africa, it is Egypt and Tunisia. The research analyses the impact of the attacks on the tourism performance indicators. The project part focuses on the elimination of the terrorist attacks in a particular tourism destination and, furthermore, the initiatives taken for the minimalization of the negative impacts from hospitality perception, based on the data gathered at the analytical part. Project part also presents courses of action usable in the after event of a terrorist attack for immediate recovery. The suggestions and recommendations mainly refer to pricing and marketing strategies, including the work of statistical data suitable for accommodation services.
