Corpus-based Linguistic and Pedagogical Investigation into Delexical Verbs

Anotácia:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na skupinu velmi běžných anglických sloves, které se nazývají delexikální slovesa, např. have, make, give. Na základě práce s korpusem byla tato slovesa zkoumána z lingvistického i pedagogického hlediska. Pro studenty cizího jazyka jsou však tato delexikální slovesa problematická a proto se jim často vyhýbají. Hlavním cílem této práce bylo prokázat důležitost učení těchto sloves v různých strukturach a popsat konkrétní implikace pro jejich učení. Dále je zde objasněn rozdíl mezi delexikálním slovesy a jejich příslušnými lexikálními slovesy, např. to have a drink - to drink. Tato práce prokázala, že tento jev bývá zřídka kdy obsažen v gramatikách i učebnicích pro studenty cizího jazyka, ačkoliv jsou tato slovesa v současné angličtině běžně používána. Dále zde byla potvrzena důležitost práce s oveřeným jazykem (korpusem) a zohledňování frekvence při učení lexikálních obratů v cizím jazyce.

Abstract:

The focus of this thesis is on a very common group of English verbs which are called delexical verbs, e.g. have, make, give. The corpus-based linguistic and pedagogical investigations were conducted in order to delineate the major features of these verbs which have proved to be difficult for L2 students who avoid using them. Therefore the principal aim of this thesis was to demonstrate the relevance of teaching these verbs in various structures. Further, the differences between delexical verbs and related single verbs were outlined, e.g. "to have a drink" and "to drink", and practical implications for teaching were indicated. It was demonstrated that this phenomenon is rarely included in grammars and textbooks, although it is very common in current English. Moreover, the attested language and frequency were proved to be crucial aspects when teaching lexical phrases.
