Aspects of Functional Sentence Perspective in Contemporary English News and Academic Prose

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá některými aspekty aktuálního členění věty v rovinách novinářského a odborného stylu současné psané angličtiny. Práce je zaměřena zejména na identifikaci informační kontury textu, výskyt sdělných jednotek a sdělných polí, míru porušování principu linearity, zastoupení dynamických sémantických škál, znázornění dynamiky šíroké a úzké scény, a v neposlední řadě také na výskyt tří typů tematických posloupností - posloupnosti s návaznou tematizací rématu, posloupnosti s průběžným tématem a posloupnosti s tematickým odvozováním. Tyto aspekty slouží k ověření výchozí hypotézy Firbase (1974), Daneše (1985) a Friese (1995) o stylistické platnosti aktuálního členění, tedy že jevy aktuálního členění věty mohou identifikovat funkční styly. Pro analýzu jazykového korpusu byla zvolena teorie aktuálního členění věty v tzv. brněnském přístupu, který vychází zejména z prací Firbase (1992), Svobody (1981, 1989) a jejich následovníků. Pro analýzu byl rovněž vypracován nový systém značkování (tagů) aktuálního členění věty. Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že ačkoliv je možné mezi oběma zkoumanými funkčními styly současné psané angličtiny, tj. stylem novinářským a stylem odborným, najít ve vztahu k některým sledovaným aspektům aktuálního členění věty určité rozdíly, jsou si povětšinou tyto stylové roviny informačně velice podobné.

Abstract:

This dissertation investigates selected aspects of Functional Sentence Perspective (FSP) in contemporary English news and academic prose, namely the informational contour of text, occurrence of communicative units and communicative fields, violation of the FSP linearity principle, occurrence of dynamic semantic scales, dynamics of broad and narrow scenes, and types of thematic progressions, including simple linear thematic progressions, progressions with continuous (constant) themes, and progressions with derived themes. These aspects are taken to address hypotheses raised by Firbas (1974), Daneš (1985) and Fries (1995) that patterns of thematic progressions and other phenomena operating under the FSP theory are stylistically relevant, i.e. able to distinguish different register types from each other. The analysis of the language corpus in this dissertation is based on the framework developed by linguists adhering to the Brno approach to the study of FSP, described mainly in monographs by Firbas (1992) and Svoboda (1981, 1989). A new system of FSP tags is proposed and used in the analysis. The results of the analysis suggest that while the examined texts representing the news and academic prose registers of contemporary written English display certain differences in regard to some of the mentioned aspects, the texts come very close to each other informationally.
