Coping with psychological stress among novice teachers

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou zvládání psychického stresu u začínajících učitelů na základních a středních školách. V teoretické části, která je rozdělena na tři kapitoly, se seznámíme s tématem stresu obecně. Uvedeme psychologické teorie stresu, druhy stresorů a možné reakce na stres. V druhé kapitole se zabýváme tématem učitelské profese, jejím vývojem, a pracovním stresem. Pozornost je také věnována problematice začínajícího učitele. Ve třetí kapitole ukážeme různé strategie zvládání stresu a jeho prevenci. Cílem výzkumné části je zjistit, jaké situace považuje začínající učitel za stresové a jak si s nimi dokáže poradit. Snažíme se zmapovat jeho pocity při nástupu do praxe, jeho předešlou zkušenost s psychohygienou a jeho vlastní vidinu do budoucna v této profesi. Ke sběru dat je použita metoda polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. Analýza dat je zpracována formou kódování, které vychází z metody zakotvené teorie. Výzkum poukazuje na nejčastější problémy začínajícího učitele, jako je konfrontace teorie a praxe, problémy spojené s vyučováním, nízká informovanost o technikách zvládání stresu z předešlého studia na VŠ.

Abstract:

This Bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of coping with psychological stress of beginner teachers at elementary and secondary schools. The theoretical part is divided into three chapters in which we introduce the topic of stress in general. We mention several theories of psychological stress, different kinds of stress and possible reactions to stress. Second chapter deals with teaching as a profession, its development and with occupational stress. A part in this chapter is also devoted to problems of a beginning teacher. Third chapter mentions different strategies of coping with stress and its prevention. The practical part of the thesis aims to find out what situations beginner teachers consider to be stressful and how they can cope with those situations. We try to map their emotions when they first start working, their previous experience with psychohygiene and their prospects in the teacher's profession. To collect the data the qualitative method of semistructured interview is used and for analysing the data the method of grounded theory is used. The research points to the most frequent problems of beginner teachers, such as confronting the theory and the practice, problems connected to teaching and not enough information about the techniques on how to cope with stress in previous university studies.
