Rhodophyta (Corallinales, Sporolithales) from the Middle Miocene (Badenian, Sarmatian) of the Central Paratethys

Abstract:

V predkladanej dizertačnej práci boli študované vápence centrálnej Paratethýdy. Vzorky pochádzajú z trinástich lokalít. Zo vzoriek bolo zhotovených 178 výbrusov ktorá boli šzudované optickým mikroskopom. Päťdesiattri druhov neuzlíkatých koralinných rias bolo identifikovaných a zoradených do kľúča na určovanie na základe platných diagnostických znakov. Po prvý krát je opísaná riasa Lithothamnion crispatum Hauck ako fosílna podľa poznávacích znakov pórových buniek. Pórové bunky nie sú vždy zachované avšak ich použitie ako diagnostické kritérium bolo možné u niekoľkých druhov rodu Lithothamnion. Facie vápencov bolo možné porovnať z faciami dnešného Stredozemného mora. Vápence sa tvorili v normálnom morskom prostredí litorálu za prítomnosti intenzívnych ale málo frekventných udalostí akými sú napríklad búrky alebo búrkami hnané prúdy. Druhy nachádzané na mobilnom substráte dnešného Stredozemného mora obývali rovnaký substrát aj v Strednom Miocéne. Podľa faciálnej analýzy a rastových foriem je možné usúdiť že z dokumentovaných prostredí stredného miocénu v predkladanej práci obývali druhy Mesophyllum cf. printzianum a Mesophyllum cf. erubescens najhlbšie prostredie. Na hranici badenu a sarmatu došlo k dramatickej zmene v počte identifikovaných druhov rias. Dvadsaťsedem druhov je dokumentovaných vo vrchnom bádene zatiaľ čo len jediná v spodnom sarmate. Prítomnosť koralinných rias v spodnom sarmate poukazuje na to že okrem zmeny v salinite ovplyvňoval distribúciu rias aj iný faktor. Nízka diverzita koralinných rias v spodnom sarmate je spojená so stresovými podmienkami. Slabý hydraulický režim, vysoká koncentrácia sirovodíku a organickej zložky v sedimente, absencia spásavých organizmov alebo ich kombinácia pravdepodobne urýchlili vymieranie rias a pravdepodobne kontrolovali distribúciu oportunistických druhov v sarmate.

Abstract:

Limestones from the Central Paratethys were studied in the presented dissertation thesis. Thirteen localities with the stratigraphical range Badenian – Sarmatian were collected. From these samples one hundred and seventy eight thin – sections were analysed by an optical microspcope. Fifty three species of non-geniculate coralline red algae were identified from the Middle Miocene (Badenian, Sarmatian) limestones of Central Paratethys which could be recognized on the basis of accepted diagnostic criteria and arranged into the identification key. Diagnostic characters associated with the dimensions of pore canal cells of tetra(bi)sporangial conceptacles are mostly not preserved. However, it was possible to use them to separate the species within genus Lithothamnion. Lithothamnion crispatum Hauck is recorded as fossil species for the first time, previously known only as a cosmopolitan inhabitant of the modern seas. The observed characters associated with specialized pore canal cells of L. crispatum proved species attribution. On the basis of actuopaleontological approach it was possible to correlate the environment of the Middle Miocene limestones with the facies of the Modern Mediterranean. The Limestones were formed in normal marine settings within the littoral zone under the regime of currents, affected by events of high intensity and low frequency as storms and storm driving currents. The species of recent soft substrate of the Mediterranean inhabited soft substrate in the Badenian of the Central Paratethys as well. On the basis of the facies and growth form it is possible to conclude that Mesophyllum cf. printzianum and Mesophyllum cf. erubescens were deep water species, inhabiting the deepest documented environment of the Lower Badenian Central Paratethys of this work. Dramatic decrease of non-geniculate coralline algal species occurred on the Badenian Sarmatian boundary as suggested by 27 Upper Badenian and single Lower sarmatian Sarmatian species. The presence of coralline algae points to at least one more factor which controlled diversity decrease on the Badenian Sarmatian boundary rather than lowering of the salinity solely. Low diversity of facies with coralline algae in the Sarmatian within shallow warm conditions could be associated with stress conditions during the Sarmatian. Low hydraulic regime, high hydrogen sulphide and organic content in sediment, the absence of grazers or mix of them are proposed as factors which affected extinction and controlled the distribution of species with dominant opportunistic growth form in the Sarmatian.
