On the issue of the textile industry of Czechoslovakia and its importance for foreign trade in the years of 1928–1938

Abstract:

Diplomová práce mapuje textilní průmysl Československé republiky v letech 1928 až 1938 a jeho význam na zahraničním obchodě ČSR. Hlavní, prací zkoumaná, hypotéza zní, že podíl výstupů textilního průmyslu Československa vykazoval na celkovém exportu, ve sledovaných letech, klesající tendenci. Teoretická část práce se zaměřuje na popis hospodářského vývoje textilního průmyslu do roku 1928, a zároveň představuje základní zahraničně-obchodní teorie a principy. Praktická část práce nabízí analýzu hospodářského cyklu, který zasáhl textilní průmysl nejprve skrze Velkou hospodářskou krizi, kdy utlumil prakticky všechen realizovaný import surovin a export statků, následně konjunkturou, která vedla k drobnému zotavení textilního průmyslu, a závěrečným přechodem v recesi, propadnuvší se do krize umocněné politickými tlaky uvnitř Evropy. Nominální komparace a grafické výstupy práce, postavené na archivních zdrojích z fondu Ministerstva průmyslu obchodu a živností, a současně také na primárních zdrojích, jakými jsou Textilní obzor, Národohospodářský obzor či Statistické příručky a ročenky Československé republiky, zobrazují měnící se strukturu zahraničního obchodu z hlediska jednotlivých textilních odvětví a celkový pokles vyváženého objemu, čímž poskytují dostatečné množství podkladů pro verifikaci hypotézy o snižujícím se podílu textilního výstupu na celkovém exportu Československé republiky v letech 1928 až 1938.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis analyses the textile industry of the Czechoslovak Republic in the years of 1928 to 1938 and its importance in the foreign trade of Czechoslovakia. The main hypothesis investigated in the thesis is that the share of the output of the textile industry of Czechoslovakia in the total export showed a downward trend in the years under review. The theoretical part of the thesis focuses on the description of the economic development of the textile industry until 1928, and at the same time presents basic foreign trade theories and principles. The practical part of the work offers an analysis of the business cycle, which affected the textile industry first through the Great Depression, when it dampened practically all realized import of raw materials and export of goods, followed by the boom that led to a small recovery of the textile industry, and the final transition into recession, which plunged into crisis exacerbated by political pressures within Europe. The nominal comparison and graphic outputs of the work, based on archival sources from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and at the same time also on primary sources, such as the Textilní obzor, the Národohospodářský obzor or Statistické příručky and ročenky Československé republiky, show the changing structure of foreign trade from the point of view of individual textile sector and the overall decrease in the exported volume, thus providing a sufficient amount of data for the verification of the hypothesis about the decreasing share of textile output in the total export of the Czechoslovak Republic between 1928 and 1938.
