Mass media as a factor of international politics in the age of globalisation

Abstract:

Obsahem této diplomové práce je vztah médií a mezinárodní politiky na pozadí novodobého trendu globalizace. Teoretická část práce je tematicky zaměřena na vztah médiía mezinárodních vztahů, konkrétně na roli médií v teorii konstruktivismu. Dále obsahuje teorii o médiích jako takových, jejich typologii, stručnou historii a vliv globalizace na jejich proměnu. Důležitou součástí této části práce je také analýza funkcí médií a jejich rolí ve společnosti, zejména ve vztahu k politice. Praktická část práce se opírá o analýzu mediální prezentace vybraných mezinárodněpolitických událostí (konflikt v Kerčském průlivu, chemický útok v Chán Šajchúnu a jaderným test v KLDR) v médiích v České republice, Ruské federacia Spojených státech amerických. Z důvodu vhledu do problematiky je součástí této části práce také stručná analýza mediálního prostředí v těchto vybraných státech a stručný politicko-historický kontext vybraných událostí.

Abstract:

This master’s thesis focuses on the relationship between mass media and international politics against a backdrop of the current trends in globalisation. The theoretical part is focused on the relationship between mass media and international relations, particularly on the role of media in the theory of constructivism. Furthermore, this part also comprises of a theoretical overview of mass media, their typology, a brief history and the influence of globalisation on their development. The analysis of mass media’s functions and their role in society, especially in their relationship to politics, is another vital part of this thesis. The practical part of the thesis utilises an analysis of the portrayal of selected international political events (the conflict in the Kerch Strait, the Khan Shaykhun chemical attack and one of the nuclear tests in DPRK) in media in the Czech Republic, the Russian Federation and the United States of America. A brief analysis of media in these countries is provided as well as a concise historical context of the previously mentioned events is outlined in order to provide a better insight into the presented issues.
