The Role of Universities in Tackling the Problem with New Religious Movements in Japan

Abstract:

One of the enduring problems in Japanese society is the presence of countless new religious movements. Because of their various illegal or socially unacceptable activities some of these groups came to be called karuto (from the word “cult”). This thesis deals with the new religious movement problem in Japanese society (karuto mondai) and focuses on the role of universities in dealing with the problem in practice. Universities have a persistent problem with disallowed activities of religious groups on campus, as followers of said groups often approach more impressionable students trying to manipulate them into investing their time and money in the group. The aim of the thesis is to describe what steps universities take to prevent involvement of students in a religious group and in case of detecting religious group activity on university soil. Furthermore, the thesis examines the ability of universities to adapt their measures to the change in religious organizations’ strategies and increasing online activities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract:

Jedným z prevládajúcich problémov v japonskej spoločnosti je prítomnosť nespočetného množstva nových náboženských hnutí. Kvôli rôznym nelegálnym či spoločensky nežiaducim aktivitám nadobúdajú niektoré tieto skupiny pejoratívne pomenovanie karuto (zo slova kult). Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá problémom nových náboženských hnutí v japonskej spoločnosti (karuto mondai) a bližšie skúma rolu univerzít pri jeho praktickom riešení. Univerzity majú dlhodobý problém s nepovolenými náboženskými aktivitami na ich pôde, keďže prívrženci hnutí často oslovujú práve ľahšie ovplyvniteľných študentov v snahe zmanipulovať ich, aby svoj čas a peniaze venovali skupine. Cieľom práce je preskúmať a pomenovať konkrétne kroky, ktoré univerzity podnikajú v rámci prevencie interakcií študentov s náboženskou skupinou či v prípade zistenia činnosti náboženskej skupiny na pôde univerzity. Ďalej práca osvetľuje prispôsobenie opatrení univerzít zmenám stratégií náboženských skupín a presunu ich aktivít do online priestoru v období pandémie COVID-19.
