The Body and the Corporeality in Renaissance Philosophy, Medicine and Art

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce představuje způsob uvažování o lidském těle a jeho tělesnosti v renesanční filosofii, medicíně a umění. Hlavním cílem této práce je představit a dokázat interdisciplinární vztahy mezi těmito třemi disciplínami a jejich pohledu na lidský organismus. Tato práce má tři hlavní části. První část je věnována renesanční filosofii a její diskusi o lidské důstojnosti a postavení člověka v universu. Průzkum je zajištěn texty dvou renesančních autorů: Pico della Mirandoly a Juana Luiese Vivese, kteří představují lidskou bytost jako nejdokonalejší božskou bytost, které je věnována sláva a obdiv. Druhá část odhaluje typické atributy renesanční medicíny a její typickou literární formu. Pro pochopení hlavních rysů, jsou zde představena díla těchto renesančních lékařů: Jana Jessenia, Marsilia Ficina a Andrease Vesalia. Jessenius považuje lidské tělo za objekt anatomického zkoumání a svou praxi legitimizuje teleologicky. Protikladným je Marsilio Ficino a jeho dílo De Vita Libri Tres, ve kterém představuje návody a doporučení, jak se zbavit melancholie, kterou považuje za skutečnou hrozbu ohrožující renesanční intelektuály. Andreas Vesalius považuje lidské tělo též za nejvíce hodné obdivu a své anatomické zkoumání legitimizuje též teleologicky. Třetí část zobrazuje renesanční výtvarné umění a zejména díla Leonarda Da Vinciho, Albrechta Dürera a Sandra Botticelliho. Leonardo da Vinci své anatomické kresby obhajuje též teleologicky. Malířství považuje za druhou přírodu, které je propojené s filozofií. Albrecht Dürer a jeho Melancholia I, představují melancholii, která vystihuje renesanci. Sandro Botticelli ve svých obrazech Primavera a Zrození Venuše představuje typické humanistické rysy spojené s renesančními oslavami. Na základě těchto reprezentativních autorů jsem došla k závěru, že renesanční filosofie, medicína a výtvarné umění představují podobný přístup, a jejich hlavní rysy dokazují interdisciplinární vztahy těchto tří diskursů.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses the way of thinking about a human body in renaissance philosophy, medicine and art. The main goal is to introduce and prove interdisciplinary relations between these disciplines and their view on human organism. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part is dedicated to renaissance philosophy and discuses its view on human dignity and man's place in the cosmos. This theory is supported by the works of two renaissance authors: Pico della Mirandola and Juan Luies Vives, who introduce human as the most perfect divine being that should be celebrated and admired. The second part reveals the typical attributes of renaissance medicine and its typical literary form. This is supported by the works of renaissance physicians: Jan Jessenius, Marsilio Ficino and Andreas Vesalius. Jessenius considered the human body as an object of anatomic studies and his practice was justified by teleology. Marsilio Ficino opposed this view in his work De Vita Libri Tres where he introduced instructions and recommendations for dispelling melancholy which, according to him, was the real threat to renaissance intellectuals. Andreas Vesalius considered human body worthy of admiration as well and his works were also justified by teleology. The third part displays renaissance art, especially the paintings of Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer and Sandro Botticelli. Leonardo da Vinci's anatomic paintings have its roots in theology as well. He considered painting a second nature connected to philosophy. Albrecht Dürer and his Melancholia I reflects melancholia, which was epitomizing renaissance. Sandro Botticelli symbolized the typical humanistic features connected to renaissance celebrations in his paintings Primavera and The Birth of Venus. Based on works of these authors, I have come to the conclusion that renaissance philosophy, medicine and art represent a similar approach and the main features prove that these three disciplines are indeed intertwined.
