US foreign policy toward Panama

Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza reálného zahraničněpolitického vztahu mezi USA a Panamou. Panama byla vybrána proto, že od raného koloniálního období se nacházela v zájmu velmocí pro svoji geostrategickou polohu a možnost vybudování průplavu, který by byl stěžejním strategickým zájmem. Panama se nakonec přiklonila k partnerství s USA, přičemž druh tohoto vztahu, tj. zda se jedná o hegemonické postavení, vztah podřízenosti a nadřazenosti či vztah dvou suverénních států, bude zkoumán v této práci. Je zřejmé, že tento vztah se vyvíjel, a proto zkoumaným obdobím bude delší časový úsek – funkční období čtyř konkrétních prezidentů. Než přistoupíme ke komparaci těchto obdobích, je nutné představit pozici USA v době studené války a operaci Just Cause, neboť tyto dva faktory mohou určitou měrou výsledný vztah obou států silně ovlivňovat.

Abstract:

The aim of the work is the analysis of the real foreign policy relationship between the USA and Panama. Panama was chosen because, since the early colonial period, it had been in the interest of the great powers for its geostrategic location and the possibility of building a canal, which would be a key strategic interest. Ultimately, Panama moved towards a partnership with the US, and the nature of this relationship, i.e. whether it is a hegemonic position, a relationship of subordination and superiority, or a relationship between two sovereign states, will be explored in this thesis. It is clear that this relationship has evolved, and therefore the period examined will be a longer period of time - the tenure of four specific presidents. Before proceeding to the comparison of these periods, it is necessary to present the position of the USA during the Cold War and Operation Just Cause, as these two factors can strongly influence the resulting relationship between the two states to a certain extent.
