Life with Alzheimer's Disease: The Impact of the Disease on the Quality of Married Life

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vlivem Alzheimerova onemocnění na kvalitu manželského soužití jak z pohledu nemocného, tak z pohledu pečujícího partnera. Cílem práce bylo popsat podobu každodenního manželského soužití, ale také způsoby, jakými se partneři s danou životní situací vyrovnávají. V teoretické části jsou popsány psychosociální faktory ovlivňující život nemocného i pečujícího partnera. Přínosem je propojení perspektivy obou partnerů. Navazující empirická část je založena na výzkumu sebepojetí partnerů, jejich vzájemného vztahu a postoji k onemocnění a péči. Výzkumu se účastnily čtyři manželské páry, tzn. celkově osm participantů. Na základě polostrukturovaného rozhovoru a následné tematické analýzy dat byla vytvořena tři souhrnná témata. První téma „Jsi to Ty? Jsem to Já!“ se týká proměn, ale také zachovaných charakteristik v sebepojetí obou partnerů. Druhé téma „Chvíle souznění a rozlady“ zachycuje přístup partnerů k sobě navzájem. Obsahem třetího tématu „Sdílené onemocnění“ je postoj partnerů k onemocnění a péči. Na základě souhrnných témat byly sestaveny profily manželského soužití jejichž účelem je zachytit vliv onemocnění na podobu manželského soužití.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the influence of Alzheimer’s disease on the quality of married life from the perspectives both of the patient and of the caring partner. The aim was to describe the form of everyday married life but also the ways the partners cope with the existing life situation. The theoretical part of the thesis describes the psychosocial factors affecting the lives of the patient as well as of the caring partner. The benefit of this view is the interconnection of the partners’ perspectives. The following empirical part is based on the research of both partners’ self-concept, their mutual relationship and their attitude to the disease and its care. The research includes four married couples, i.e. the total of eight participants. Semi-structured interviews followed by the data thematic analysis serve as the basis for setting up three summarizing topics. The first one headed “Is it you? – Yes, it’s me!” refers to the changed as well as preserved characteristics of the partners’ self-concept. The second one, “Moments of harmony and the moments of conflicts” reflects the partners’ approach to each other. The content of the third topic called “Shared disease” is the partners’ attitude to the disease and its care. Finally, based on the three topics, the thesis presents the profiles of married life representing the impact of the disease on the quality of married life.
