Fossil Elephants with Special View on Mammoths

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá postkraniálním skeletem tří evropských druhů čeledi slonovitých: mamutem jižním (Mammuthus [Archidiskodon] meridionalis [Nesti]), mamutem srstnatým (Mammuthus primigenius [Blumenbach]) a slonem lesním (Palaeoloxodon [Elephas] antiquus [Falconer and Cautley]). Většina zpracovávaného materiálu pochází z pěti lokalit. Materiál druhu M. primigenius pocházel z lokalit: Předmostí, Milovice (Česká republika) a Spadzista (Polsko). Tyto lokality náleží mladému paleolitu (gravettien) a jsou charakteristické převahou mamutů v kosterním materiálu. Druh M. meridionalis pochází z lokality Svrchní Valdarno (Itálie). Tyto nálezy spadají do časového období villafranchien na hranici pliocénu a pleistocénu. Druh P. antiquus byl prostudován na materiálu z lokality Frankleben (Neumark-Nord, Německo). Tento materiál byl nalezen ve vrstvách usazených během interglaciálního klimatického optima v pánvi, která vznikla po rozpadu kontinentálního ledovce sálského glaciálu (drenthe). Práce se zaměřila na srovnání většiny postkraniálních kostí mezi těmito třemi druhy a osteometrickou analýzu kostí z jednotlivých lokalit. Byly nalezeny rozdíly ve stavbě karpálních kostí mezi slonem lesním a ostatními dvěma druhy. Jedná se o rozdílnou strukturu kostí: os pisiforme, os trapezium, os trapezoideum, os magnum a os hamatum. Dále byly porovnány jednotlivé metody určování pohlaví: podle struktury pánve, prvních dvou obratlů a velikosti dlouhých kostí adultních jedinců. Ukázalo se, že metoda determinace pohlaví podle prvních dvou obratlů není spolehlivá. Morfologie pánve je jasně odlišná u obou pohlaví. Je to nejspolehlivější metoda, ale vyžaduje kompletní adultní pánev. Metoda rozlišení pohlaví podle velikosti dlouhých kostí je spolehlivá. Je ale vhodné, aby studovaná lokalita byla zastoupena především adultními jedinci a aby materiál byl dobře zachován. Byla také zkoumána struktura jednotlivých populací na základě všech zkoumaných postkraniálních kostí. V lokalitách Svrchní Valdarno a Frankleben převažují adultní jedinci. V případě Franklebenu je zjištěný poměr pohlaví vyrovnaný. V lokalitě Svrchní Valdarno převažují samci. V lokalitách druhu M. primigenius převažují juvenilní a subadultní jedinci. V lokalitě Milovice se vyskytuje kromě těchto velikostních a věkových kategorií pouze několik adultních samic. Lokalita Předmostí je zastoupena i několika fetálními jedinci a významným počtem adultních samců. V lokalita Spadzista se vyskytují všechny velikostní a věkové kategorie, ale poměr pohlaví je nevyvážený ve prospěch samic. Předpokládáme, že tyto rozdíly jsou způsobeny rozdílným charakterem sídlišť paleolitických lovců.

Abstract:

This work considers of the postcranial skeleton of three European species of family Elephantidae: the southern mammoth (Mammuthus [Archidiskodon] meridionalis [Nesti]), the woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius [Blumenbach]) and the forest or straight-tusked elephant (Palaeoloxodon [Elephas] antiquus [Falconer and Cautley]). The most bone material selected for this investigation comes from five localities. The samples were chosen such way as to show representatives of three European elephant species from important localities. Mammuthus meridionalis comes from Upper Valdarno (late Villafranchian) in Italy, which is the type locality of this species. The sites Milovice and Předmostí in the Czech Republic and the site Craców - Spadzista in Poland have provided M. primigenius remains. These sites are dated to the Upper Palaeolithic (Gravettian) and they are characteristic by an overrepresentation of mammoth bone in the faunal material of the sites. The examples concerning the remains of P. antiquus comes from opencast near Frankleben (Neumak-Nord, Germany). This material was found in layers of the last integlacial period in basin, which has arised after continental glacier disintegration during the Saale-Glacial (Drenthe). This investigation has focused on comparison of the most postcranial bones between these three species and on osteometric analysis of bones from individual localities. Differences in structure of carpal bones between the forest elephant and other two species were found. There is the differences on the bones: os pisiforme, os trapezium, os trapezoideum, os magnum a os hamatum. Individual methods of sex determination were compared: after the pelvic structure, first two vertebrae morphology and after adult long bones. It was shown that the method of the sex determination after the atlas and epistropheus morphology does not work properly. The pelvic morphology is clear distinct between males and females. It is the most reliable indicator of sex but it is necessary to have at disposal a complete adult pelvis. But skeletons are often found with this element lacking. On that account the long bones appear more preferable indicators of sexual differences, but only in large samples. The disadvantage of this method is that it can rely only on adult and well preserved specimens, leaving out the younger individuals. The structure of individual localities was analyzed on the basis of the all studied postcranial bones. Adult specimens predominate in the sites Upper Valdarno and Frankleben. The sex ratio in the locality Frankleben is equable. Adult males predominate in the locality Upper Valdarno and juvenils and subadults predominate in the sites of M. primigenius. Only several adult females are represented in the site Milovice instead of these size and age classes. The site Předmostí is represented also by several foetal individuals and by important amount of adult males. There are all age and size classes in the site Spadzista but the sex ratio is imbalanced. There is the slight overrepresentation of females. These differences may be caused by distinct character of Palaeolithic settlements.
