Abstract:

Práce sleduje, jakým způsobem je hollywoodská produkce nabízena na DVD nosiči. Ačkoli nový digitální formát nevyvolal tak radikální změny ve vztahu filmového průmyslu a publika jako uvádění filmů v televizi nebo jejich distribuce na videokazetě, intenzifikovalo DVD některé dosud marginální praktiky. V tomto ohledu se DVD stává jak předmětem, tak nástrojem výzkumu, nabízí totiž možnost sledovat některé obecnější procesy, probíhající v americkém filmovém průmyslu. Zaměřujeme se na analýzu praktik produkce a distribuce na DVD trhu, na rétoriku propagace a na diskursivní rámování škálou různých paratextů, které obvykle hollywoodské filmy na tomto nosiči doprovázejí. Zkoumáme tato témata diachronně v širších historických souvislostech: tento přístup odhaluje, že na novém trhu dochází k intenzifikaci procesů, které byly před příchodem DVD spíše marginální. Základním cílem je analýza produkčních a distribučních praktik a recepčních modů, spojených s uváděním filmů na DVD.

Abstract:

This doctoral thesis focuses on the way the Hollywood production has been marketed on the new digital format of home video (DVD). Although the new format has not induced such radical changes in the relation between the film industry and its audiences as screening movies on television or their distribution on videotapes, DVD has intensified some of the practices that had been heretofore marginal. In this respect, DVD is both the subject and the means of the research, as it provides a possibility to reveal some of the general processes that are under way in the Hollywood industry. We analyse the practices of production and distribution on the DVD market, the rhetoric of promotion, and the discursive framing provided by various appendices which accompany Hollywood movies on this format. We attempt to research these topics diachronically in a wider historical context, which allows us to follow them as a part of long-lasting processes, by the same token, protects us from any premature theses about radical shifts caused by digitalisation. What this approach reveals is a strong intensification of processes that were rather marginal on the home video market before the advent of DVD. The basic objective of this text consists in providing the analysis of both production and distribution practices used on the DVD market and cultural and reception modes associated with the success of this format.
