Anotácia:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zkoumat a porovnávat vyobrazení imigrantských zkušeností zahraničních osadníků ve Spojených státech ve dvou románech, Giants in the Earth (1927) od Ole Edvarta Rølvaaga a O Pioneers! (1913) od Willy Sibert Cather. Teoretická část práce stanovuje pozadí literární analýzy. Konkrétně popisuje životy autorů skrz prizmu cestování a proměňujícího se prostředí a stručně představuje děje vybraných děl. Dále se zaměřuje na literární a historický kontext románů, jejichž stopy v nich lze pozorovat. Empirická část práce analyzuje a porovnává zkušenosti dvou generací osadníků popsaných v románech z hlediska finančních a životních podmínek, vzdělání, genderových vztahů a pocitu národní identity.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to examine and compare the portrayals of the immigrant experience of the foreign settlers in the United States in two novels, Giants in the Earth (1927) by Ole Edvart Rølvaag and O Pioneers! (1913) by Willa Sibert Cather. The theoretical part of the thesis establishes the background for the literary analysis. It explores the lives of the authors with a focus on their travels and briefly outlines the plots of selected books. Furthermore, it delves into the literary and historical backdrops of the two novels, the traces of which could be observed in them. The empirical part of the thesis analyses and compares the experience of the two generations of settlers described in the works from the standpoints of financial and living conditions, education, gender relations, and the sense of national identity.
