The Role of Humor for Paragliding Pilots

Abstract:

V dnešní době jsme svědky nebývalého zájmu a angažovanosti v extrémních sportovních aktivitách, které jsou jedinečné v tom, že zahrnují fyzickou zdatnost, ale zároveň specifický přístup ke světu i sobě samé-mu. Porozumění zkušenostem extrémních sportovců je omezené, a na-víc zkreslené obecným přesvědčením, že nejdůležitějším aspektem extrémních sportů je rizikové chování. Předkládaná práce se s využitím tematické analýzy v pojetí autorek Braunové a Clarkové (2006, 2021) zabývá rolí humoru ve velmi specifickém prostředí extrémního sportu paraglidingu. Téma humoru jakožto účinného způsobu vyrovnávání se s výzvami profesního i každodenního života bylo v minulosti psychologickou perspektivou mnohokrát nahlíženo. Paragliding ale poskytuje nový neobvyklý rámec pro zkoumání humoru a dává předkládané studii dvojí význam: doplnění poznatků psychologie humoru o novou perspektivu; a přispění k chápání psychologie extrémních sportovců. Protože téma humoru mezi piloty paraglidingu je neprozkoumané, má tato studie především explorativní charakter. Na základě jednotlivých témat, které z dat vyplývají, s oporou teorie a relevantních recentních výzkumů vytváří studie narativ poskytující srozumitelné zmapování této problematiky, a přispívá k lepšímu chápání psychologie extrémních sportovců, jakožto jedinečné a těžko dosažitelné skupiny lidí.

Abstract:

We are witnessing an unprecedented interest and involvement in extreme sports activities. These sports are unique in that they involve physical fitness, but at the same time a specific approach towards the world and to oneself. The understanding of experiences of extreme ath-letes is limited and distorted by the general belief that risk-taking behavior is the single most important aspect of extreme sports. With the use of thematic analysis presented by Braun and Clarke (2006, 2021), this thesis deals with the role of humor in a very specific environment of the extreme sport of paragliding. The topic of humor as an effective way of coping with the chal-lenges of professional and everyday life has been viewed many times in the past from a psychological perspective. However, paragliding provides a novel unusual framework for such investigation. Given that the topic of humor among paragliding pilots is unexplored, this study is primarily exploratory in nature. On the basis of topics that arise from the anylsis, this study creates a narrative providing a mapping of this problematics and thus plays a role for better understanding the psychology of a unique and hard-to-reach population of extreme athletes.
