Women in Scottish Writing - Female Characters and Modern Female Identity

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis discusses the position of Scottish women, as seen from the perspective of  Scottish woman writers as well as that of the female characters who all have to deal with the consequences of the marginal position they occupy in the society. Scotland represents a region, which, as a matter of historical and political developments, has suffered from the feeling of inadequacy in an uneven union with its English neighbour. Moreover, Scottish women characters have to deal with the unequal position between men and women which results from the phallogocentric tradition. In this way, the work tackles the issue of gender.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá zabývá pozicí Skotských žen zkoumané z perspektivy Skotských spisovatelek a také pohledem hrdinek Skotského románu. Jejich pozice je specifická historicko-politickým vývojem Skotska určeném marginálním postavením v rámci unie se sousední Anglií. Navíc se hrdinky skotského románu musejí vypořádat také s následky falogocentrické tradice, která se projevuje ve společenských rozdílech mezi muži a ženami. Tímto způsobem se práce dotýká také gender problematiky.
