Pronunciation Problems of Czech Speakers of English: English Consonants

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the pronunciation problems of English consonants pronounced by Czech speakers.Theoretical part deals with selected English consonants which are atypical or even non-existent for the Czech language. Also, some of them can be somehow included in the Czech system of consonants but they can have different qualities than in English. Specific consonants are described in theoretical part using a comparison from various specialised sources which are concerned with phonetics and phonology. Those English consonants, which occur in the Czech language but are modified in several ways are frequently compared with their Czech counterparts. Research part focuses on the chosen speakers who were predominantly final-year students of grammar school. The rest were final-year students (bachelor studies) from the university. English was the major of all the university students. Fifteen students took part in the research in total. The aim was to discover to what extent or whether there is any problem with the specific English consonants concerning Czech speakers. Alternatively, whether the speakers use any substitution for the incorrectly pronounced consonant. The research part is based on audio recordings. Responses to quiestionnaires serve as support for this research.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na problematiku výslovnosti anglických konsonantů českými mluvčími. Teoretická část se zabývá vybranými anglickými konsonanty, které jsou pro češtinu atypické, či dokonce neexistující, nebo v češtině existují, ale mají jiné vlastnosti než v angličtině. Specifické konsonanty jsou v teoretické části popsány za pomocí srovnání z různých odborných zdrojů zabývajících se fonetikou a fonologií. Dané anglické konsonanty, které v češtině v různých modifikacích existují, jsou často srovnávány s jejich českými protějšky. Praktická část se zaměřuje na výslovnost vybraných mluvčí z posledního ročníku gymnázií, potažmo z posledního ročníku bakalářského studia na univerzitě. U univerzitních studentů byla angličtina hlavním oborem. Celkem se výzkumu zúčastnilo patnáct studentů. Cílem práce bylo zjistit, do jaké míry a zda vůbec způsobují vybrané specifické anglické konsonanty českým mluvčím problémy, popřípadě zda existuje u českých mluvčí nějaká náhrada daného chybně vysloveného konsonantu. Součástí analýzy jsou rovněž audio nahrávky a dotazníky sloužící jako opora pro přímý výzkum.
